Introduction: How to Restore an Attic

I was looking at my photo library when I got the idea of publishing an instructable about the attic I restored some years ago. While searching for the right photos, I realized that this room was the subject of quite a few of my instructables.

Since the room was restored about 10 years ago, some photos are blurred and low defined. I hope you'll understand that I use them only because I have no alternative.

You will see that during the years a lot of things changed in the configuration of the room.

Step 1: The Starting Point

Some blurry photos to show you how it was before the restoration

Step 2: Insulation

The first step was to insulate the whole thing. To save heating energy, we lowered down the ceiling. We also add an insulation layer on the floor. Since it is the warmer room of the house, it helps to keep the other floors cool in summer.

Step 3: Electric Wiring

Wiring the room is very time consuming and boring. It depends a lot on the material you need to cut in order to make place for the wires. By the way, for a geek like me, having the appropriate wiring in the room is essential :)

Step 4: The Big Bookshelf

Actually, it's not really a bookshelf.. not only at least. Just look at the picture to understand. This is the biggest furniture in the room and is part of the structure (you cannot remove it).

In the photos you can see some details on the building process.

Step 5: The Small Room and the Outside Balcony

The lower part of the roof was barely usable. The right part was used a a small room where I can use my computer, the left part has no roof and was trassformed in a veranda/balcony.

Step 6: The Closet Over the Stairs

Initially the area over the stairs was empty. It was a huge volume of the room that was unused, so we decided to add a small closet for winter clothing.

Step 7: The Fish Tank

Initially I decided to add a small table in the main room. Since I was not using it, I decided to substitute the table with a fish tank and add a closet that was easy to access.

Step 8: The Bed and Lights

Some final touches: a bed and some decorative lights :)
As you can see from the photo, I played with my room for almost 10 years changing some details from time to time.
I really enjoyed finding new solution and modifing my room.
I hope to infuse you some inspiration.
If you plan to modify your room in the future, please post the steps on instructable and send me a link :)
