Here are a few tips and suggestions, for improvements you can make to your webcam surveillance system:
- First of all it is likely that if a burglar notices he is being recorded on webcam, he will steal your computer even if he otherwise did not intend to, on the off-chance the pictures might still be on your hard drive and that they haven't been forwarded to a remote server.
To prevent this, you could leave your computer in a room you think is very secure in your house, and record via a wireless webcam.
Alternatively, you could paint or tape over the recording light on your web cam, and switch your screen off, which might give the impression your computer is not on.
- If you are going to monitor your house mostly at night, you could remove the infrared filter behind the lens of your web cam (though this involves disassembling it). It will greatly improve its near-infrared capabilities.
- If you want to record from your window (your car may be parked in the street for instance, and you want to monitor it), you may find that 1. because you are recording from far away people's faces might not be easily recognizable and 2. many things may trigger your webcam unnecessarily such as birds, cats, and passers-by. Unless your webcam already has a zoom feature, you could download a programme such as CamZoomer (search for it under 'products'), which allows a 2x ZOOM without loss of quality and can zoom up to x8 using digital zoom while retaining decent quality. Though CamZoomer is shareware, the demo version is limited only by a reminder. It can be downloaded from the link on this page
