Use the selvage (this is the "finished edge" of the fabric - it won't fray!) as a straight edge. It will make your life so much easier. I wanted to use my lovely clear ruler, but had to break out the yardstick instead!

Since my pillow is 18x18, I'm cutting out one piece that's 19x19.

The other two pieces, I'm taking six inches off the length. This way they overlap prettily.

My other two pieces are 13x19.

So, to summarize:
  • cut one piece that is your length+1 and height+1
  • cut two pieces that are your length-6 and the same height.
