Introduction: How to Spray Paint Something That Is Metal and Rusted

Hey everyone, I'm back with another contest instructable. I want to show you guys how to build all certain kinds of cool things and just do some regular stuff as well. Anyways, let's move on to the challenge.

Challenge: Spray paint the rusty metal sign in front of my mom's apartment building.
I don't have much time to do this or a lot of tools/ money for. So  I improvise just a little. If you have all of those fancy sand blasters and sanders do the job that way. This is the way to do this on a budget and do it with little experience.

Now, let's move on!!

Step 1: Materials

Here is the list and the picture of the materials that you will need:

-metal scrubber (sos pads are the best I think)

-safety glasses

-a bucket

-2 towels ( 1 that will be wet and 1 that will be dry)

-spraypaint (color and amount of cans depends on the surface you will be painting. Also rustoleum and krylon are best)

-water

-a mask

-something to hydrate yourself with

Step 2: Step 1: Clean Your Surface

The first thing that you need to do is clean the sign. The cleaning is very basic and all you really have to do is wipe all of the dust off and get other grime off. You then have to wipe all of that of with your dry towel.  This is one of the easiest parts of the job.

Step 3: Step 2: Start Geting the Rust Off With the Metal Scrubber/ Sos Pads

Now, dip your sos pad or scrubber in water and start to scrub all of the rusty parts off. You do not need to get all of the rust off since you will be painting this, but make sure that the spraypaint will adhere to your surface properly. When you are done, get all of the excess sos soap and water off.

Step 4: Apply the First Coat of Spraypaint

Now you need to apply the first coat of spraypaint. I suggest two coats of spraypaint. This will seal the metal off from the elements very well. When you spray, being about 1ft away from your surface seems good to me. Make an even coating, it is o.k. if you don't get everythig in the first coat. This is what the second coat is for.

Step 5: Apply the Second Coat

there are no pictures for this step because you can just do what you did for the first coat. after you do this, you are done!!!

Step 6: The Finished Product!!
