How to survive a minor to moderate zombie outbreak.

Oh sh**t!! You have a man covered in blood with a chuck missing from his neck banging on your window, looks like you may have zombies! (Note: If the attacker is short wearing all green he is likely Irish and just drunk no need to shoot him in the head just call the cops.)

Step 1: Supplies! (you wont find these at Staples)

These are the basic things you will need

1. Non-perishable food.
2. Weapons.
3. Survival kit
4. Odds and Ends

I love the .45 & I have carried one every day on duty for the past 21 years. With that said, during the impending zombie apocalypse it would be best to have a Glock .40 and a Beretta 92. The sole reason being that most police holsters (in the US at any rate) are filled with Glock handguns and the Beretta is the standard issue sidearm of the National Guard. There will be plenty of magazines and ammo to be had when the apocalypse arrives. In a pinch, you can pick up the weapons themselves; however, you want to know that your weapon is reliable and where those pointy things go when they come out of he business end. A lot of police and military issued weapons are not lovingly maintained and you don't want to have to pull maintenance on them, much less check the zero, when Zack is on the loose. Even though headshots look easy in the documentary series "The Walking Dead" , you probably won't have time for target practice, nor is it a good idea as it will draw Zack into the area before you may be ready. Once properly zeroed, it would be valuable to take inexperienced members of your group out for some live fire stress inoculation in lightly infested Z territory. The same reasons can be used for the Remington 870 and the M4/16 platforms. You can find them in almost any cruiser in the country. You can also use 00 buck to breach doors in a pinch and the 870 will fire everything from birdshot to slugs. You simply can't beat it for a scattergun. Sorry for droning on but a hit team from the CDC Special Investigations Unit poisoned me with some Bombay Sapphire (in the spirit of the Olympic host country) in yet another attempt to silence me and my warning song.

um... i disagree with almost everything here... getting a assualt rifle or anything like that... have fun finding ammo. pistols your better off with a 9mm and really you have a reliable gun with ready to find ammo and never use the thing, one shot fired will bring everything and assault rifles are bad because unless your trained to not spray the damn thing youll freak and hold the trigger and the only way you are gunnu affect the zombie is if you hit it in the head, silencers are going to do jack because in the end if you play your cards right you wont need to use a gun and in the instance you need to use a gun.. they already know your there....

(a marine is nothing without his rifle, a rifle is nothing without its marine none of that is right. marines are trained in hand to hand combat, so thats the first part thats proved wrong, and the second part, you dont have to be a marine to be able to load and fire military weaponry. for the shotgun i would suggest the AA12 auto shotgun my self. heres a point to ask yourself, why have a .45, when you can have a desert eagle .50, or, refereing to your point about smg's why not have a micro uzi or uzi pistol? (they are actually different weapons, contrary to popular belief, look it up for more info.) my personal weapons of choice below: AA12 auto shotgun Panther LR308T IMI desert eagle .50

.50 is a bit overkill. two much kick, if fired indoors everyone is deaf, and low ammo capacity (7 shots.) also AA12 is ausome but the amunition capacity is way to low for an automatic. i say this because with every zombie game i play, when you need to reload, you are dead. for that reason, the best firearms would be a USP .45 with extended mag and surpressor,
AK47with surpressor, no stock/folding stock, bipod, barrel mounted bayonet and torch, two 75rd drum mags and 4 sets of 45rd flip mags. 7.62X39 will drop most things in one shot, AK's are arguably the most reliable gun in the world, and with everything noise surpressed the zombies will hopefully be less suspicious and wouldent run for miles to ruin your day.

My personal weapons of choice;

Dragunov SVD. Light weight, decent calibre.

MP5 or something similar with a good rate of fire, lightness, and available ammo. 9mm is common enough.

Glock 19/20/etc x2. 9mm as well, so i only need 2 types of ammo, 1 for pistol/mp5 and dragunov. Drag ammo might be hard to find though, isnt standard NATO 7.62 i think.....

For close quarters i'd have some form of jacket with plastic(polycarbonate aka bulletproof glass) in a sort of armor shape in the arms and across the chest. A helmet wouldnt hurt, but it would get in the way.

Best advice is get on a boat, with food, and stay in the middle of a deep river.....zombies cant swim right?

Good call on the rifle. For me: Rifle would be Remington 700 with bipod and decent scope. 9mm for pistol, but not a glock. I don't trust a hammer-less pistol; especially on the run.
The MP5 is good, or any other sub machine gun for that matter, but not for the zombies. That's for the other non-zombified crazies. But I think I'd rather have an M4 or a similar assault rifle with ACOG, flashlight, silencer, and a couple other goodies. (Maybe an M203 for kicks and giggles) >:D
As for your jacket, got with one of the several armored motorcycle jackets. Leather would provide a little defense in itself. Add the kevlar or polycarbonite armor with the mobility they provide and you're golden.
Up close, a quality tactical hatchet or spiked bludgeon.

Oh and zombies can't swim, but theoretically, they can climb anchor ropes. Unless you anchored to a couple of trees. Probably wouldn't have the instinct to pull you in by the rope.

decent choices with the dragonov, because i think any fight with a thing that fels no pain is going to turn bad (i am uncordanated with fights but i am a decent shot) and any bloodsplats at close range could turn you into one of them.
look into the MP5k, best compact zombie gun. can be used one handed, you can get 100rd drums, 9mm can break skulls and mush brain easily, verry manureable, and only around 1.5 kg i think it was.

Scrub that, m4 without the butt stock.(instead of mp5) M203 would be a nice option but not exactly easy to obtain for a civilian(or ammo). lol

Desert Eagle .50s are also somewhat unwieldy compared to the majority of .45 pistols. I'd bypass an SMG and go straight for something like M4 or some other compact rifle. Little bigger but has a punch to it and would give you better range. My choices would be: M4 or G36 (small enough for somewhat close quarters and mid-range) M39 (long range) MEU .45 pistol and if I was strong enough or had enough room, I'd haul around a Mossberg 500 too.

smart comment. thought about it though, and having one pistol of each common calibre would be far more usefull. .357 DESERT EAGLE isen't to practical, but as far as i'm aware, it is pretty reliable, and the ammunition capasity is better than a revolver. if you have decent holsters, drawing another pistol is way faster than reloading. also a .38 snubnose, colt M1911 .45, .40 S&W USP with a suppressor, glock 9mm sub compact with 33rd mags, ruger MK3 assasin, and a Raging Taurus Judge Magnum .45LC & .410.
asside from the supressors, all of those are readily avalible in america.

also, think about doble layer motor cycle leathers. how hard is it to bite through two layers of leather? nothing normal can.

This is a good start, but it if good to note that the idea of surviving a zombie apocalypse is highly situational, depending on where you start, what kind of zombies it turns out they are in the horde and how the situation started, among other conditions. Smoke Bombs wouldn't be useless at all, there will most likely be other survivors who would have banded up and are more than willing to "happily take the extra weight of you and take your cothes" (Raiders, looters escaped criminals etc.) and the smoke bombs would help you escape as normal humans won't be able too see through the smoke without difficulty.

Just realised you are the author. Lol. No wonder you are too thick to see that smoke bombs will never work when you are on foot running from an enemy which can still sense and smell you. Smoke bombs = weight. And you want to travel as light as possible. So no smoke bombs, and you can include another 2-3 magazines for your rifle.
