even i don't know anything of skateboarding, the way to fall like this, is very tough. You can fold your wrists and break them, therefore too, YOU'LL STOP THE IMPACT WITH YOUR HEAD WITH NO HELMET!! even with helmet, you can break your neck like your wrist. The best way to fall is like a cat, like nerd12 said. You land with your hands on the floor, over your head, the force pass to your arm and your shoulders, not the wrist itself, and then use your legs to make just the same. With some luck, you should do 3 or 4 steps, and you're up again. If not, you can use this parts like a spring and absorb the major part of the shock. Is just physics. action-reaction

Not sure if true...

Or just trying to sound smart...

just saying I was in a martial art called judo and the first thing they teach you is when you fall don't land on your hands if you do it might brake your wrists

I think it's called Mari ukemi or something... I do judo to by the way.

...neither with your head (as picture shows).
Try with forearm/arm/shoulder (the left from the picture) towards your chest. The you'll roll properly ;o)

It is amazingly easy to break your arms that way(landing on your hands), my friend barely fell at all and landed on his arms. And guess what? He broke his arm

Falling like this would never work. Hit feet first and roll off to the side, while bending your knees. I'm surprised you didn't break your wrists.

you seriously all don't realize this is a joke??

Exactly

isint this kinda trivial thing to post on?
the best way to absorb the fall is like a cat.
bend your hands and knees and transfer the vertical movement to horizontal.
i always jump down the stairs by about 10ft at a time(diagonally) and this works for me.
BAKEMASTER33 says: May 16, 2011. 3:43 PM
Do not do this you WILL get HURT.
josh1324 says: Aug 24, 2011. 6:56 PM
Do not roll? That is the stupidest comment i have ever seen, if you do fall properly, you could break your neck or split your head open. Next time you write a comment, think about it before you post it.
nerd12 says: Oct 5, 2011. 7:41 AM
if he rolled like that i am surprised he did not crack his skull like an omelet and break his neck.
1. that was a gymnastic roll, not a proper shoulder roll. so it hurts his neck.
2. at that angle he most certainly would break something.
3. rolling is fine is done properly. this is not properly.
jordomaller says: Mar 23, 2011. 10:44 PM
i always use the tuck and roll technique when falling depending on how big of a drop or bail it is. Most of the time you are going fast enough that when you push off with your hands you just do a sort of front hand spring and most of the impact gets absorbed throught rotation and not just downward momentum.
zs says: Mar 20, 2011. 5:47 PM
i was always told never put your arms down like that, as it ois how you break your arms. Just take the fall and dont risk further injury.
_kira_ says: Mar 20, 2011. 6:46 PM
True. I broke my wrist completely in half when I put my arms out when falling to drop in a half pipe (MINI).

The thing was 4 feet tall! What ever you do, never in your life stick your arms out.

Curl your arms around your head to prevent a concussion and lift the back of your head so it doesn't hit the ground. Head and arms protected.

Your ribs can take a serious beating and be fine. So you don't be afraid of breaking (or bruising) them.
supertoria12 says: Mar 11, 2011. 2:45 PM
well what if you crack your head and its bleeding heavily. you cant hide that, not to mention you'd need immediate help and a trip to the emergency room. play it safe, dont grind on a ramp like that until you know how to without falling.
supertoria12 says: Mar 11, 2011. 2:40 PM
In the last image, it looked like he could've landed easily on his feet.
supertoria12 says: Mar 11, 2011. 2:36 PM
Where's his helmet?
Peacemaker636 says: Nov 28, 2010. 2:02 PM
I honestly don't know how he didn't get more hurt from this. His hands and head are taking all the impact. If at all possible, try to land on your feet, or at least have them hit first...they are much hardier than your head. If you're too off-balance, try rolling on your shoulder or side, tucking your head the whole way. Trying to catch yourself/go into a roll may be more difficult than you expect and next thing you know you've got a concussion.

the fall would damage your neck or spine, or even break your skull. at that height, even if you're muscular... you can never tell if your arms, elbows, wrist, and shoulders would bear all your weight at sudden impact.

search videos about Aikido Front Rolls on youtube. this is safer than the one illustrated. been pacticing Aikido for years and had performed these rolls (even hard falls/break falls) on concrete. no injuries.

Monkeyboy13 says: Mar 14, 2010. 6:04 PM
Having your head in that position while falling can give you a broken neck or concussion if your elbows go too far back. A better way to do this to do a side roll. Try to get your feet to the ground, then let yourself fall onto your dominant shoulder and roll off of that. It is much safer and doesn't kill your wrists. I can't fall on my hands anymore because I have "permanent sprain(according to the doctor)" in my right wrist due to falling on it so many times.

It's amazing how these skaters survive failed trick falls. I watch them a lot in my hometown block. It's like they don't have no bones. I would have to comment on this position though. I practice judo rolling as well as Aikido jump and fall kind of drop. So, falling on both hands is better than no hands at all. If you're light enough(which skaters usually are) you might be able to carry your weight to support the fall. Just to add a safety precaution, it is best to tuck your head inwards when rolling like this. So inwards that your chin should touch your chest. If your falling to your right, tuck it down to your left and vice versa. This will take some practice to be effective. The purpose of this is that should you fail to support your own weight, you fall on your back and not on your head. Once again in martial arts rolling, you must roll line a wheel starting with your hand to your upper back or top shoulder down to your butt. Like a big red carpet being rolled out.

No harm meant to be done but... putting your hands out to catch yourself will dislocate your arm. Just saying.
bluefly1215 says: Jun 14, 2010. 12:15 AM
Putting your hands out will fracture your radius and ulna. I have seen many of this type of injury and casted them. Don't lock your arm either. I suggest using wrist splint protectors, and to learn how to absorb the shock with your body.

I don't care if this is fake, that's pretty funny.

Ok, let me start off with the good: it's nice that you are somewhat compelled to teach people how to prevent hurting themselves.

The rest of this instructable is so terribly misguided I can only list the problems:

1) The photos are very obviously photoshopped. The motion blur is all wrong.

2) The ledge isn't even grindable! The absence of wax or wheelmarks are dead giveaways. Plus, the concrete top is tiled; there are gaps in between that would make skating it even more absurd.

3) Ok all the falling stuff has already been said but you do not want to roll on your head. Period.

Anyways, who cares? Just go out and skate and have fun. You won't learn much about skating from here anyway (not to the detriment of the site; it's awesome!).
articice says: Apr 18, 2010. 10:42 AM
4) picture 3 is not a real ollie, pictures 4&5 aren't a grinding position, esp. picture 4. Picture 7 is a definite neck-break and death if it was for real.
