And you are done!
There are the instructions on how to take apart a TV or monitor!

The main reason why I wanted to take apart a TV or monitor is I am after one part: The flyback transformer. You can make many great high voltage projects with the flybacks.

Check out those two great instructables about how to make a high voltage power supply with a flyback transformer:
MAKE A HIGH VOLTAGE SUPPLY IN 5 MINUTES
Simple flyback driver

Here is another instructable about how to make a lighting globe with a flyback transformer.
Make your own Lightning Globe!

And most of the other parts inside the TV or a monitor can be quite useful too.

Before you throw out all your unwanted TV parts, be sure to check out this instructable on how to get tons of  enameled wire! How to get tons of free enameled copper wire

I hope you found this instructable useful!

i wanted to point out that the most high voltage can do is burn you from the inside out if you are in contact for long, not kill you. The current is what killsm not the voltage.  It takes 50mA to kill, a CRT transformer only puts out about 20mA to 30mA.  It shouldn't hurt you, but could give severe burns.  I hope this helped you! :)

i touched a capacitor in a TV and it threw me across a room and i was unconscious for a while. my father also touched one, though his was a microwave and it burned a hole in his finger lasted about a year before it healed over. but they can kill you there are countless reports of it happening. its always best to be careful.

Actually, lethal current is only around 30mA, but current as low as 20mA has known to kill. It depends mainly on the contact time and what path the current flows through your body(eg. your heart). The cause of death by electrocution is mainly due to the alternating current altering the rhythm of your heart's beat which causes it to freak out and eventually stop. You should probably avoid this. I have always thought it much safer to wear a grounding cord and strap (a bare wire wrapped around your arm with the other end grounded would suffice) on my arm if working with high voltage. At least this will give the electricity a path to follow that isn't through my heart, but instead through my arm and down the wire. I haven't tested this however...

Note that while it's the current that kills in most cases, high voltage can still cause serious and lethal burns to internal organs. This requires more contact time though.

Yes, that's a good point.

you should have kept the electron gun and took the enamal copper out

Hey what do you know about electron guns and where can i find them?
Dec 7, 2010. 12:20 AMcroslandjr123 says:
Electron guns can be found in the neck of the CRT (thin glass tube at the back of the CRT, with a circuit board or wires attached to it. However, if you really want it, you will have to break the tube which is highly dangerous because the CRT will implode and you could lose your vision or what from flying glass fragments. Electron guns shoot out red, green and blue electrons in a beam that scan up and down on the screen at a certain rate to create a moving picture. By the way, why would you want one...? Just wondering, cos' they don;t have much use in normal atmospheric pressure lol.

I'm pretty sure electrons are all the same color and the dots inside the tube are just colored differently. Have a look with a magnifying glass, I just did its freaky!

I currently threw all mine away so I can't have a look and really see if your comment is right or not though! :-(

you dont have to break the tube to get them, ive had four of them and never broke the tube, all you gotta do is loosen the screw...

Hang on a minute... Are you talking about the deflection yokes with lots of enameled wire on them?
Dec 20, 2010. 7:43 AMJimmy Proton says:
o, ya sry, i have gotten one of those but i threw it away, can it be used for anything?
Dec 20, 2010. 3:24 PMcroslandjr123 says:
Uh, no not really... Has a lot of enameled wire though... It would be useful if you could get all of it off but it can be rather difficult sometimes.

i was talking about the electron guns, i do play with the electromagnets some times tho.

this is a really cool descution cuz iv taken like 5 tvs apart and i never wondered any bit about that big glass tube.. all know is that theres some reallly high tempaerature coils in there and i use thoes to build coil guns so its grat to learn somethin new thnakx guys :)

wicked information dudes, i got an old tv and a monotor i been dyin 2 rob 4 parts, but haven't been game cos i knew u could get a nasty shock if u don't know what ur doin, so thanks,

there are electric shocks and then there are electric burns which fry your skin
Sep 16, 2009. 6:02 PMsea_hinchey says:
I'm doing this right now. we removed the suction cup thing and the cord and didn't get shocked, which is lucky as I'm learning this minute. is there still a risk once the suction has been removed?
Oct 31, 2009. 5:52 PMsim2lew says:
If you discharge the CRT by connecting the anode (suction cap) to the ground, but not removing the anode cap, then the tube can charge up again. After removing the anode cap, the tube cannot charge up again as there is no circuit.

i am trying to find an easy way to electrocute mice my cats bring me in the house alive....please no negative comments on cats.... i bought 6 rat zappers but eventually i had to spray the mice to get the jolt...not really convenient. i searched and so far havent found a way for someone scared of electricty (i climbed a tree in a storm and was knocked off ladder by ball of fire at next tree over...couldnt let go of an old metal handle on an old dryer once till my mom came and took broom handle and unplugged the fuse box to electric to dryer...etc. kater

I googled your suggestion but got no directions. I hope there is an instructable sometime. I was connected to electricity myself when younger, as in above, and it does not hurt, it's scary yes, but it does not hurt.....so that is why I was happy to get a way to kill them without pain...any other ideas I would go for, but I cannot get the information needed to go your route. the rat zappers stop working after awhile..and mice can kill by causing fires, so I would not try the bell thing, they tend to get their collars in trouble so it's a vicious circle.

Thanks for your information, i will look into it! I hate dealing with them dead OR alive. My latest trap has a wheel inside, I caught a poor fat little mouse and luckily the new tenant took it outside lately....I heard mice don't like peppermint and also cayenne pepper so I put the pepper in my garage doorways... I would use moth balls more, but since I can't smell I'm afraid I might inhale too much of it.

Alaska cabins use Mothballs to deter Bears... The results are mixed.. The current move is to electric fences, but they are carefully calibrated.
