If you don't use a steamer (we never did and have done this in many houses) then very lightly score the walls with a knife of scraper edge before the initial wetting, just a big criss cross pattern, this makes the solution soak in much faster and a bit deeper, as long as you go lightly the paper will still come off whole aswell...

I just wanted to add I did this last year and I would recommend renting a steamer as well. It went much faster, much cleaner, and did not damage the walls. Like night and day between the chemical solution and steaming it off.
