Follow these step by step pictures to learn how to tie a square knot. A square knot can be used for many different things like tying two ropes together or make a circle with one rope. It is the easiest knot I know how to tie.

Proper scouts call this a Reef Knot.  It's on the World Membership Badge.

But proper sailors call it a square knot. A reef knot is the version where the final tuck is a loop instead of an end. Makes it much easier to take apart after it's had a load on it.
