Introduction: How to Turn an Old T-shirt Into Yarn

About: I'm a crafting mommy of nine. I play video games, I love to crochet, sew, paint, bead, cook, write, watch movies and have fun:) I will try almost anything at least once. I blog about everything, gardening, cook…

Do you have some t-shirts laying around and your wondering what to do with them? Make them into yarn so you can use them for all kinds of projects. I am going to show you how.

Step 1: What You Will Need

An old t-shirt

A pair of scissors

Step 2: Prepare the Shirt

Lay your shirt out flat.

You are going to cut it from just under one armpit to the other.

Then you are going to cut off the bottom where it folds up. Don't throw these pieces away. Save the buttons for another project (if your shirt has buttons). The upper part of the t-shirt you can make into rags, baby wipes or sew them together for a scrappy quilt...etc...

Step 3: Start Cutting

Now you can begin cutting. Start from either end and start cutting a piece approximately 1/4 to 1/2 inch wide. You can use a ruler if you want to be exact but I don't.

Step 4: Wind

Wind the yarn as you go to prevent tangling.

Step 5: Round and Round

Keep going around the t-shirt. No need to sew anything. Just cut right through the seams. If they come apart just tie the two ends together.

Step 6: All Done

You are ready to create your one of a kind items! Here are some things I have in the works. Make some pot holders, hot pads or a rug!!
