Step 1: Getting the software needed.

You will need to download some software before you can start this process. Make a folder to store all of the files. Remember the location of this folder as you will need to point to it at multiple times throughout this instructable.

1. Itunes 8.2
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

2. The IPSW for your Iphone or Ipod.
Sorry, I cannot link to these directly but a search in google will get them for you. Also I have trouble finding them shoot me a PM and I can give them to you.

3. RedSn0w from the Dev-Team (Current version is redsn0w_0.7.2)

Every time I select a IPSW in redsn0w, it says "Unable to recognize specified IPSW"... I've tried it on my official IPSW's, and even downloaded ones..

I am very sure this is illegal. You need to put that in your Instructable. Also, you need to put what jailbreaking it even means.

Not technically. There is no law stating that you can't upload firmware that Apple doesn't approve of. It DOES violate the user agreement, and therefore, you wont be able to send back the device for a refund, or repairs with the jailbreak. This agreement is also uncovered by law as a contract, so you are legally safe in that aspect as well. Its the equivalent of opening your PC tower, and voiding the warranty on it. Keep jailbreaking.

Also, if you got the firmware without paying for it. This IS illegal, so proceed at your own risk.

Ok so I have jailbroken my touch 2gen before. If I upgrade to 3.0 firmware, do I have to jailbreak it with this version, the version I've used before, or will it stay on when I upgrade?

You do not want to upgrade. You want to do a restore with backup. This will wipe your ipod and restore it back to factore with the new OS 3.0. You can then restore your backup that you created. You then need to use the new version of the jailbreak software as the older version do not work with the new OS 3.0. Some of the programs that worked with OS 2.2.1 may not work on the new 3.0 software. I do know that Winterboard from cydia does still work. :)
