Human hair cave skirt

Human hair cave skirt
Years ago I came to inherit a huge bag of weave my friend was getting rid of. Most of it had been used and was raggedy looking or dyed, so i held onto it for many years and many apartment moves trying to figure out a project to use it for. Eventually I joined a band with a campy caveman theme and decided to use the weave to make a human hair skirt, so it was good that the hair I started with was already messy.

It moves in a really cool way and looks totally unlike any other skirt. At first glance it looks like some type of costume hula skirt, but once folks realize it's made out of hair they totally love it!

* These steps can be used to make weird weave costumes of all types- capes, masks, vests, bustles, now you think of one!

For this project you'll need

-Weave (not the loose hair, the type that's sewn together)
-A zipper
-A few narrow lengths of fabric
-Thread or hot glue

Step 1Get some weave

Get some weave
This skirt is made from 3 loops of weave arranged in tiered layers, they're sewn to vertical strips of neutral colored fabric - very simple to make but it looks weird and awesome when it's on.

Dumpster at the salon, buy it, save yours, start collecting your friends' throwaways, but do yourself a favor and start with the type that's already sewn together.

Sew or hot glue together a length that is your waist size. Pin it together around your waist, then figure out where your next tier should go. I positioned mine about 2.5" apart, where the hair started thinning out. Make as many loops as you need to get the length and fullness you want. Positioning them closer together will make the skirt fuller, and you can also layer multiple strips onto one another. Don't sew any of the loops completely closed yet though, just safety pin them

I liked using a zigzag stitch because it's sure to hold the hair together.
