IKEA Hacks - The Best of Instructables Volume 1

Projects from the gallery section of the first chapter of The Best of Instructables Volume 1.

Furniture is made to be general, it's supposed to fit the general need. My need, however, is quite specific! So when I see a piece of furniture that isn't quite doing it for me, or a wall that's a little too barren, I know it's my job make something that will fit me. From redesigning very plain looking lamps, to creating shelving or even hacking together a tool box, these projects are a lot of fun, and very helpful if you're on a tighter budget.

Take apart their furniture, re-wire their electronics; you'll never see IKEA the same way again.

The original Malm beds were sturdier... Though they seem to go to bits eventually, though the bendy slats are much much better than the original flat ones the frame's starting to coma apart...

Not impressed with that... But Ikea I love in general...

The problem with Ikea is everything they sell "looks" like it came from Ikea, nothing has individuality. It's not for people who think outside the box so to speak. I guess you could say it's a lifestyle. Sorry to sound like a snob.

I would argue that if you say that about IKEA, you have to say it about everything from any furniture store. It may not be your taste, but I personally like a lot of their designs.

The WONDERFUL thing about IKEA is that, as seen here, their furniture makes an excellent and inexpensive jumping-off point for people DIY-ers to express their own creativity and personality.
Jan 31, 2010. 5:10 PMbuffysissy1 says:
If your using Ikea furniture, housewares, etc. to express your creativity than you must not have any. Ikea is about marketing, not design. There's a difference.

I disagree. Many of the Ikea projects on here show a great deal of creativity. Sounds like we just have a difference of opinion.

Ikea's sweedish. Lol.

Also, Americans aren't stupid, we just love greed more than anything else and we'd do anything for money. That's why our economy (even when it's in recession) is still one of the strongest in the world.

And our greediness naturally leads to a need to protect our things...

Which is why we have the greatest and best equipped military in the world.

I love America.

You don't sound like a snob, you just sound like someone who judges other people based on their interior decorating choices.  In other words, a horrible bore.

LOL! There are 18 IKEAs in the UK, there are 4 in London. I've only been there twice (same place in London), and now I have an urge to go there again! I WANT TO PUT SOMETHING TOGETHER NOW! I'll disassemble my DS and put that back together to cover my techy side... If I get into uni next year, I'm gonna get soo much stylish flat-pack Swedish crap!

I can't believe I'm going to say this but... What is IKEA?
Jul 16, 2009. 11:50 PMDurchschnittspunk says:
Wow....
IKEA is a pretty much internationally known furniture warehouse, most of the stuff is designed by swedish designers....
Jul 11, 2009. 5:32 PMamarks1009 says:
Our IKEA store (and most others I believe) has an area off to the side of the main warehouse where they stack damaged items, pieces that have fallen off, damaged samples, overstock or discontinued items. IKEA 'hackers' typically find pieces/parts in this area, and re-use the pieces/parts in new and creative ways. We LOVE this room at our IKEA -- we find all kinds of cool bits & things to play with!
Feb 8, 2010. 5:25 AMbuffysissy1 says:
Thats cool, do they sell the parts or they are being thrown out and people just take them.

Jan 29, 2010. 9:00 AM--scare-- says:
they actually try to sell broken furniture or dented tables and stuff for 15% off regular price!!! (more or less) who in their right mind would buy a table with a big dent in the middle of the plywood (no, wait, it's particle board!!) for 200+$... or a chipped glass vase or a broken shelf for 15% off... i'd throw it away or make something else out of it! I mean, materials costs way less than that!! it's ''RUBBERY'' (rubbish+robbery)

I saw a glass table with the glass peice missing and the price tag was 175$ for the metal frame that goes under the big glass!!! i can make that for the price of... FREE!!! with stuff that people throw out on trash day (if i get there before the scrap metal dudes)

I HATE IKEA!!! but i love those swedish meatball they have... XD   Also, kids tend to get lost in there!! keep them close!! or someone will put a ridiculously high priced tag on them... lol
