all you need is a regular balloon (not a water balloon) and food color (optional)

Whoa. I want one!
lexflex says: May 19, 2011. 11:10 PM
I not understand the ice not found with the time
silverleaf says: Apr 11, 2011. 1:29 PM
Don't you feel like freezing it for forever?
Its soo darn pretty :)
LindsayFester says: Feb 13, 2011. 7:30 PM
I've made these a couple of times now, but mine don't look like that. The surface isn't as smooth and if I drain the water, I lose all the colour. It still looks neat, but I'd like to keep the colour.

Also, if I leave it for longer than 4-5 hours, the outside is clear and the center is solid food colouring, like an egg yolk.

Any advice? Is it the food colouring I'm using? :)

SICK! i love it
happyjo says: Jan 7, 2011. 10:59 PM

Drain the water out of the Crystal?
kawaiipeach says: Sep 21, 2010. 9:14 PM
it's not crystal, it's just ice :P
ComplacentBard says: Oct 29, 2010. 3:17 PM
ice is a crystaline substance
wito31 says: Sep 2, 2009. 3:49 PM
Why take out the water?
kawaiipeach says: Sep 21, 2010. 9:15 PM
because the ouside layer is solid while in the inside water is still liquid
Dinerro94 says: Oct 12, 2007. 4:55 PM
wouldn't the ice expand when frozen. in other words the balloon would pop!
dobos111 says: Aug 26, 2010. 6:58 AM
its a balloon - they are meant to expand
masterj says: Jun 26, 2008. 1:58 PM
it wouldnt expand that much .... in fact iv frozen ice in glass cups .... didnt break
red-king says: Jan 30, 2009. 9:44 PM
things contract when they freeze.
masterj says: Feb 3, 2009. 8:14 PM
water expands not contracts when frozen ... its thermodynamics
sonaps says: Jan 30, 2009. 10:08 PM
Water, when freezing, forms a six-sided crystaline structure. This actually causes it to expand and become of lower density than water (hence ice floating in water).
minimidget says: Oct 19, 2007. 4:41 AM
That would only happen if the balloon was filled to maximum capacity. If you leave room for it to stretch, you should be fine.
buterSBob29 says: Oct 13, 2007. 4:19 PM
ya

Generic Eric says: Sep 22, 2009. 8:52 AM
That is a neat idea! Would make some nice decorations for a snowman or snow castle.
tugharris says: Sep 15, 2007. 12:16 PM
Why not try putting a blue LED throwie inside to maximize the effect? Cool Project!
