Introduction: Impressive Coffee-rubbed Steak

For the special occasion when you want to treat someone special to dinner, try out this grilling recipe.  You will achieve steakhouse flavor for only a small fraction of the price, and have a sweet and casual dinner.  

This rub produces a bold, complex taste that I love.  Hope you will too. 

Step 1: Coffee Rub Ingredients

You will need the following:
  • 2 Tbsp ground coffee beans
  • 2 Tbsp ground black pepper
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp sea salt
  • 1 Tbsp ground cumin
  • 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper

Step 2: Creating the Dry Rub

Preheat your oven with the heat set to broil.  Place the ground coffee onto a sheet of aluminum foil and broil for 45 seconds, shaking every 10 seconds. You will see that the ground coffee will start smoking if it gets too hot.  Let the coffee cool before mixing in the rest of the dry rub.

Step 3: Rub Into Steak

Rub generously into the steak. I used two 1lb T-bone steaks. Don't be afraid of the flavor! :)

You can also see that I am preparing scalloped potatoes and asparagus on the side.

Note: For even grilling, make sure the steaks are taken out of the refrigerator and left to room temperature for about an hour.

Step 4: Grill

To prepare the sides, place the potatoes and asparagus onto the grill on high heat.  Baste in olive oil and sprinkle sea salt over. Flip the potatoes when golden brown and repeat with the olive oil and sea salt. Remove each when cooked to perfection. The potatoes will take approximately 40 minutes while the asparagus may take about 5 minutes.

For the steaks, grill approximately 5 minutes on each side for a medium doneness.

Step 5: Enjoy Your Masterpiece

Plate and serve.

Enjoy with some wine and good conversation for a pleasant way to end the night.

mmmm....this looks awesome. it resembles Cowboy Rub by McCormick. i think i might try this...one question though. why do you broil the coffee first. the coffee is already roasted...

Supposedly it is to make the coffee have a more bold and complex flavor, but I just did some research on this and it seems to be a bit controversial on reheating coffee grinds. I'll have to try this without heating the coffee grinds next time to see the difference.
