This time I won't show you anything fancy , nor properly mandatory , But believe me it will improve the life of the plug from 6.5 months to 2+ years , believe me , it worked so great , I've had this mod since the ridiculously clever dock and have survived so far , (NOTE i removed the old insulation in order to show you this trick , it was a little filthy anyway)

It may not look Stock or Pimped , but , it works!

As I said before , nothing fancy you actually need :

-Some Pieces of heat shrink tubing (1\2 and 1\4 inch)
I've got mine in a local supply store for 1.2 ( 17 pesos) dollars

-Your Common (old or new ) iPod earphones/Headphones/things that go in your ears
Self explanatory , you buy ' em at best buy ,radioshack, liverpool , Etc. and they come with any iPod

-TOOLS
Any self-sustaining ligther (a Zippo work fine )
Something to hold the plug while you're heat shrinkin'
Scissors
And your body (hands and brain preferably )

when I split the heat shrink tube, and then heat it, it opens up and falls off.

Yeah, that is supposed to happen, i think what he did, was that he used that piece but without shrinking it he slided over an uncut piece of HST, so the cutted piece would become smaller and the piece over it, would hold it in place while shrinking them, i know its been 2 months since you asked, and maybe you already figured out yourself, but i had to answer. have a nice day,

I got my iPod earphone to work for more than 2 years and it's still working great but I think it's too dirty now, anyone ever tried to cover the whole wire with heat shrink tube? I maybe will try it if I can buy some white heat shrink tube but I seldom see them at hardware stores

Nice job! I didn't use my original ear-buds, but I can see other uses for this technique. I usually pickup a pair of Sony ear buds for like $8.00. I loose / break these things all the time. That reminds me! When wearing these while working or using tools, thread the wire under your shirt so the ear buds com up through your collar. They don't snag on anything and they hang down your chest when not in your ears. Functional if not fashionable advice. :) - Chris

Did it cheaper and earlier...

here that and heat shrink can be too rigid and cause the same issue but just in a different place than before...
