Inflatable Bed to Stand-Up Paddle Board Pump Adapter

Across Tomales Bay in Point Reyes National park are some of my favorite campsites, which can only be reached by boat.  On our most recent trip, my wife, Christy, was concerned about sleeping comfortably on just a sleeping pad due to a rib injury and being many months pregnant.  Since we either sail or paddle across the bay, weight of gear isn't much of an issue, and since our boats are an inflatable kayak and an inflatable stand-up paddle board, I was already carrying a hand pump.  To ensure her comfort, I brought an inflatable bed, and made an adapter so I could inflate the bed with my stand-up paddle board's pump once we reached the campsite.  I modeled the adapter in Autodesk Inventor, and printed it on an Objet Polyjet 3D printer.  Happy, restful camping ensued!

Step 1: Measure Connections

Here are pictures of the connectors at the end of the stand-up paddle board pump and the inflatable bed.  I measured the dimensions of each piece using dial calipers.  

Step 2: Model Adapter

I modeled the adapter in Inventor Fusion for Mac (free, right now!) and Inventor Professional.  Inventor Fusion does not have a coil function, so I modeled the threads in Inventor Professional (ShadyLogic actually did it on his computer).  Files are attached, should you have the exact step up I do.  

Step 3: 3D Print the Model

Here's the 3D printed part.  ShadyLogic managed the printing of it on an Objet 300 using the VeroWhitePlus material.  Note that the threads turned out a bit loose, and the adapter itself was a bit too tall (that's why there are sanding marks on it) -- if I did this again, I'd make the threads and height smaller.

Step 4: Inflate for Happy Campers

Here's the entire setup, me pumping the bed up, the bed inside our tent, and happy campers!  

It was coincidence that we were camping over Mother's Day weekend, but this really made me look good.  When I pulled out the adapter and started pumping up the bed, the other three moms on the trip promptly asked where their inflatable beds were!  

Step 5: It Is Not a Toy

Product is intended for use as a bed only.  It is not a toy.  It is NOT intended for pool use.  It is not a flotation device.  THIS IS NOT A LIFE SAVING DEVICE.
