If your house is anything like mine then you have had to install a new door more than a time or two. This process can be very tedious and time consuming if you don't take the right steps. With this Instructable I will provide you with a step by step process to make installing your new door a little easier.

Step 1: Step 1: Materials

To begin this project you will need the right materials. These materials are as follows.
Standard wood door cutout (80" x 32")
Drill
Pencil
Knob latch and hinge set (screws needed come with pack)
Doorknob drill attachment
Sandpaper or an electric sander

If you don't have these materials around the house go to your local hardware store and pick them up. All of these items are fairly easy to recognize and find the one people have the hardest time with is the doorknob drill attachment which is pictured above.

Step 2: Step 2: Measuring Your Door

Once you have the wood cutout for your door you will need to measure it with your doorframe to make sure that it fits. You can test the size out by putting it in the frame or using measuring tape. I prefer physically putting the door in the frame before anything so that you can get a good idea of how much needs to be sanded to fit snug.

Step 3: Step 3: Sanding

Typically when you buy doors cutout at the hardware store they make them slightly bigger than the frame. This is to ensure that no doors go out for sale too small since there is no way to fix it if it is already to small. If a door is slightly bigger there is always the option to sand it down to the right size. You will sand down the sides until your door fits snug against your frame. Pictured above is a special sander used for sizing down doors that I found at my local hardware stores.

Step 4: Step 4: Measuring the Placement of the Doorknob

When you buy a door from the hardware store you will notice that it is just one flat piece of wood with no holes. You will have to drill the holes where the knob and latch go yourself. To do this you must draw out where the cuts need to be made. Once your door fits nice and snug within the frame you will have to measure out where the holes for the door knob and latch need to go. Take your door over to the frame and measure up where the hole on the frame meets the door. This hole on the frame is where the latch will go. Take out your pencil and mark down where these holes need to be made on the door to make it fit with the frame.

Step 5: Step 5: Drilling Holes

Once your drawings are made and you know where the holes need to go you will get out your drill and your doorknob drill attachment. Line up the drill attachment directly with the circle you have drawn for where your doorknob hole will go and drill. Once that hole is made get out the second attachment that came in the package and drill the latch hole into the side.

Step 6: Step 6: Attaching Hinges

I like to attach the hinges next but these next two steps can be often flip flopped. I prefer attaching the hinges so that before you get the knob and latch attached you can double check to make sure that everything is going to line up. To attach the hinges take them out of the package and drill them on the sides about a quarter from the top and a quarter from the bottom.

Step 7: Step 7: Hanging the Door

Once the hinges are attached you will proceed to attach the hinges to the doors frame connecting the two. You can do this with a drill or a screwdriver. Now that it is attached be sure that the hole in the frame and the doorknob hole match up.

Step 8: Step 8: Insert the Latch

The latch will go into the door first because the two knob pieces run through it. Insert the latch and drill the screws in so that it is now attached to the door.

Step 9: Step 9: Putting the Doorknob In

The doorknob will go through the holes in the latch, it should line up perfectly. Insert both knobs into each side of the hole you have made connecting them with each other and the latch. Screw the knobs together and into the door making this door all one unit.

Step 10: Step 10: Screw the Metal Latch Piece to Your Frame

In the package that your latch came in you will find a metal piece that goes into the hole in the frame. This is the hole that the door latch goes into when the door shuts. Put this piece over the hole in the frame and screw it in tight.
