Introduction: Setting Up a Woodfire to Run Overnight

In winter the last thing you want is to wake up cold in the middle of the night because your wood fire has died down. At my home we have a slow burning wood heater. Here's our tried and tested tips on how to keep it going 24/7. To read more tips about setting up a wood fire read the full article here.

Step 1: Re-ignite the Embers

If your fire has burnt down to charcoal, open the damper and re-ignite them to start your fire.

Step 2: Add Kindling to Build Up the Fire

Step 3: With the Heat of the Embers and the Damper Open the Wood Burns Quickly

If necessary open up the damper (vent) for up to 20 minutes to minimise smoke and get the logs charred and burning efficiently.

Step 4: Move the Wood Around and Add Bigger Pieces

Step 5: Re-position the Larger Wood to Where the Fire Burns Strongest

Step 6: Approximately 10 Minutes in the Fire Is Burning Strongly

Step 7: Your Fire Is Established and Ready for the Damper to Be Closed

Before you go to bed, don't forget to turn your fan off and check your damper is closed.
