I slid the books in and even the heaviest book was perfectly snug. It turned out that two straps was too much for the smaller books and started to compress them, so I only used the front strap and squished the other strap behind it.
That is awesome =] By the way if you got really small books like pockets you can always use one strip of elastic for two of em. Won't give as nice of an effect though. Nice made/clear Instructable too!
Of course you can also put books on top.... Watch your weight though! Books are HEAVY and make certain that the supports are well anchored and that the anchors can handle the weight.... In 45 years of making shelves (never enough bookshelves!) the most common problem I've seen (and heard!) is overloading.
That's the point. No one is going to go and do this in a closet where it won't be seen. The entire reason you would do this is so that people could see and remark on it.
