I built a stand for my iphone some months ago from some pine scratch wood, a piece of plywood, some screws and an old tripod head. The wood is sanded and oil stained.
It could hold the iphone in landscape or portrait mode and allowance for the cable was left. Later I purchased an ipad2 and modified the frame to hold both. It's great for typing and watching videos.
