Make your own decals for ipods, laptops, virtually any flat sufaces with some packaging tape and magazine pics

make your ipod as unique on the outside as it is on the inside in this world full of sameness!!!

Step 1: Materials

-clear packaging tape
-magazine pics you would like to work with
-large bowl of sorts
if you're just making small decals, would it work on laptops?
I've seen this method described on several other sites. For a laptop I'd use clear contact paper though.<br />
Probably.&nbsp; But you have to be careful, and it'd be very difficult.<br /> <br /> Firstly, you'll need a big enough picture and a big enough bowl to soak it in.<br /> You'll also have a lot of trouble getting an even rub-off, etc.<br /> <br /> Logically, It should work on a laptop if it works well on an iPod.
I love this idea.. but do you have any tips on rubbing the paper off more evenly?&nbsp; The image turns out a little blotchy.<br />
tryed this lastnight. worked pretty well,&nbsp; wasnt as succesfull transfer of the ink as i hoped and had trouble with sticking to my zune.<br />
*with Pictures* totally awesome ill do this with my phone Ipod? Shame on you, youre just handing money over to apple!(hope no flame for that)
Like there's something wrong with buying quality merchandise? Go ahead and buy the cheap quality MP3 players and support WalMart instead. Your protest will go unnoticed. This is a great idea for customizing a great product.
Just because you spent $200 more than you should of doesn't mean you're getting "quality". Ipods have been known to be the poorest built of all mp3 players. The screen and batteries are shit.
And all you are buying with an ipod is an expensive fad.
i do think ipods are a little overpriced but mine works great and it is very durable
&nbsp;someone talking sense. Apple makes grerat quality products.. they are great - if you can afford them. For the money though, other mp3's can be a better deal... i have an iPod &nbsp;touch and it's great, but I had to save for a LOOOOOOONNG time...&nbsp;
Lol, wow, and expensive "fad" thats lasted over 8 years now. iPods are great.
have you ever had an ipod? great product. now my family has a macintosh!
funny you should say that, because I've heard very very few problems with iPods that are hardware based. And not very many about the software either. What do you propose we use instead of iPods? Because I think that the iPod is the best mp3 player on the market, and I'm not an apple fanboy by any means.
Accually I just got an ipod
heh. :) (comment waaaay too short.)
Just got a Ipod touch, and I want to do this! 5/5
this is awesome.
anybody know how to make the tape stickier after the paper comes off and it has dried.
use warm water it works much better. and leave on for like 15 min then u can peel paper off in almost 1 peice.
SWEET! i just put a decal on my nano and the magazine i used was Victria's Secret! Score!
dang! your ipod serves as double-enjoyment........
does it have to be a magazine
Nice. But I was wondering, since it's tape how long will it stick before it starts to peel off?
thats a good question. depending on how much abuse it takes the tape will eventually begin to peel off. i couldnt say exactly how long because i change mine quite frequently =)<br/>
Ah, okay then, thanks. :)
nice. (frequently repeated comment by me)
Wow, totally awesome.
great idea man, i wanted to do somehting to personalize my laptop, this wa sperfect, thanks.<br/><br/><a rel="nofollow" href="http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g209/AVAfireman/IMG_0640.jpg">http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g209/AVAfireman/IMG_0640.jpg</a><br/>
You can easily get any remaining GOO off with vegetable oil...works on any sticky stuff....
good tip =)<br/>
Hey, I tried this on my iPod mini and I'm having trouble getting it to stick. Do you rub off ALL the residue until you have just the plastic left? or do you leave some of the stuff on there?
the trick is that you should get the tape a little moist in order to re activate the stick. its a process that involves a little experimentation.
Ah cool, thank you
wont the ink like dye or stain the metal??? im worried that if i do this and it gets stained i wont be able to return it if anything goes wrong. plz reply
don't worry about it anyway, my ipod mini needed a new battery, i called apple and they just suggested buying a new ipod...
well i have had than problem where there is a stain on te metal but i easily got it off
no it's already dry when it goes on
i like this a lot. i'm gonna do it tomorrow. i'm to tired to do it tonight.
ya i guess its 12:11 AM where you posted
you can print Black logos if u do it on photo paper and u get the tape on immediately after it's printed
It would be a lot easier to just buy some cling film and print whatever you like on it. Also wouldn't risk leaving residue. <br/><br/><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.paper-paper.com/cling.html">http://www.paper-paper.com/cling.html</a><br/>
the only problem with that is I dont have 18 bucks to spend on special paper. But thanks for the input it sounds like a good product. :]
hey, wouldn't it be easier to just get some of that paper that comes on the back of stickers (i don't know what it's called), and put the tape on it, and tape this to a piece of letter sized paper and just print something on it... then wait for a LONG time for it to dry, then it will stick better! this seems easier than this method... and... i dunno... seems easier... some one should try this... i might... who knows?
Just used this on my iPod (which I bought for $10 off a friend who thought it was broken) works great. Great idea, great instructable. A+
mellamokiwi, I must say, this is <em>so</em> totally wicked. I don't have an Ipod, but it worked great on my creative zen micro (added bonus that the back plate is removable) I used a sort of pop-art water color from an old PC World and it looks fantastic. I was a little overzealous in my removing the paper but, it looks vintage, and totally <em>wicked</em>, I salute you. . .<br/>
i would love to see it. could you send a picture of it?
one question before i do this dose this peal off the paint or is it like that stuff on barns n knoble stickers so they dont ruin the books
