Here's an extra step to make your headphones more durable. When you remove the earpieces, carefully desolder thel wires, pass them thru a hole in the plastic casing, tie a knot and them resolder them. this strain-relief will keep you from accidentally tearing the wires out.

or you could just add a stereo jack on the case itself so if you pull the wire the plug comes out of the headset instead of the wires ripping off the drivers

I did this exact same thing more than 20 years ago. As a kid, after I saw E.T., I thought the one kid with the Headset F.M. radio was the coolest. So I grabbed my walkman headset, ripped of the speakers, grabbed the ear protectors my dad had layin' around and duct-taped the speakers inside the ear cups. They didn't hear peep out of me for months. And, I didn't hear them yelling at me to cut the grass. Later.
