If your earlobes are the right shape to use earbuds, you can do something even easier,
which is just wear the industrial earmuffs over earbuds. My earlobes don't have that keyhole-shaped bracket thingy that retains earbuds, so they fall out.

Nice! I made me one a couple of years ago to enable me to listen to megadeth while driving a bobcat ;). I made it a tad differently though. I drilled small holes to the sides of the "cups" for the wires to come out of, and in the name of DIYing, hot-glued the speakers to the mufflers.

This is a great idea. I have a huge lawn to mow and I didn't want to go deaf with my 585cc lawnmower engine running 3 or so feet from my head for 2-1/2 hours plus. So I got myself a cheap pair of ear muffs. I tried putting those little ear dangling things in my ears and then the cans. But it didn't take long for one or both of them to come out of my ear or get sideways or something. After seeing this Instructable, I was re-inspired to give it another go. I used an old pair of RadioShack Pro25's (made by Koss). The advantage with using these is the drives come off without having to cut anything. If I want to, I can put them back in place and have a lightweight pair of headphones once again. I put the drivers into my cans and took the lawnmower out for a spin. It worked great! Thank you Tim, you are the best.

Here is the finished product. Note the nice little volume control. All I need now is an iPod with a standard 1/8th inch stereo plug and I'm all set.

Ripper idea Tim! However I have been "stuffing the Earpod"s from a "Walkman" in my ears" then squeesing the safety "Ear Muff's" on top" for noise reduction and boredom relief' whilst mowing my (5) acres on my Ride on Mower! You cannot wear the Earpod's for too long as the vibration and bouncing make your ears soooo sore it is unbearable. and isuspect any movment walking running Etc will do the same? I'll let you know how I went with your Idea Tim! Good Stuff. Dasha }}}

I'll have to try this! A cool add on might be a mic and filter that cuts out all but the needed frequencies to hear speech. Then the flight attendant won't have to yell at me :)
