Jailbreak iOS5!

There are many guides for jailbreaking your ipod or phone out there, but few show you how to jailbreak apples current version of iOS, version 5. (iOS5 is the current version of software as of 11/6/11).

***FOR ALL THOSE STILL ON TETHERED JB 5.0.1- 
If you are currently operating an A4 device which has a tethered jailbreak using Redsn0w, Ac1dSn0w or Sn0wbreeze then you can simply launch Cydia from your Springboard and download a package named ‘Corona’ which will provide you with an untethered jailbreak."

THIS MEANS YOU DO NOT HAVE TO RE-JAILBREAK IF YOU ARE ON 5.0.1 TETHERED

This hack will NOT work with an iPhone 4S OR for an iPad 2. Currently the jailbreak teams are working on a release. Supported devices include the iPad 1, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod touch 4, and iPod touch 3. Also: Note that if you are using ultrasn0w or are looking to unlock your SIM, I would NOT recommend a jailbreak, I am not sure what it will do to your device. If you want more information, I am afraid you are going to have to find it somewhere else :-(

Step 1 Safety and Warnings

As usual, there is an inherent risk in jailbreaking your ipod. Things could go wrong, possibly leaving your ipod/phone "bricked" (non-functional). Please be aware of this fact, as neither I, nor the jailbreak teams are responsible for any damage done to your phone.

This jailbreak is (I think) in BETA stage.

ALSO know that this hack WILL VOID your warranty with Apple. Please use this if you want to check your support coverage (or ETA until warranty expires)

This is also a TETHERED hack. A description from wikipedia- ". A tethered jailbreak requires that the device be connected to a computer each time it needs to be booted; an untethered jailbreak allows the device to be powered without computer assistance. " If you are using an iPhone 3GS, however, an UNTETHERED jailbreak is available.

There is a Cydia app that allows a "semi-tethered" jailbreak for iOS5, allowing your ipod to reboot without a computer, but all jailbroken apps and tweaks will NOT function if phone is restarted.

ALSO from wikipedia, "Under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, jailbreaking Apple devices is legal in the United States, although Apple has announced that the practice "can void the warranty"."

Also, just to put this out there: This instructable is meant for educational purposes, not for illegal activities. Please do not use these hacks for illegal purposes.

i have ios 5.1 on my iphone and i want to downgrade to 4. something, when i try in itunes it doesn't work and i don't know how using redsn0w
any help?

do you still have the ios? if so then do a "Shift+Click" on the restore button, and locate your ios.

probably in you "my music" folder, and then in your "itunes" folder.

from there i cant remember, but search them all down to the end of folder chains until you find a .ios file. it should say something about iphone 4.x.x or something.

that is what you want to chose when doing the "shift+click" restore

hey i have done everything you asked on my iphone 4 5.0.1 but whenever i try to get something on cydia it just says cannot locate package can you just shoot me an email to tell me what to do???

these instructions are slightly older- they are for the tethered jb. A newer one is available... what version of Redsnow are you using??

Usually you can open cydia and after a minute there will be a button on the top right that you can reload your package list with.

Also- do you think I should de-publish this so people do not get confused and do an tether? Its now easier to do untethered...

but if you havent upgraded yet, its recommended to keep on iOS5 as i think 5.0.1 fixes some exploits, making it *harder* to jailbreak (reported that it will take longer to jbreak 5.0.1 than 5.0)

After I installed cydia And initialised it my iPod Deleted cydia, the appstore, safari iMessage and a lot of other original apps. What Do I do now?

i would say use the restore function in itunes to get it back to original firmware then re-jailbreak, if this isn't true im sure i will get corrected

yep.. using restore reinstalls the firmware (and erases everything on the ipod...) but you can get all the app data (even your camera roll) back if you do a full restore, and then restore from a backup.

then you can re-jailbreak

oh, and just restoring from a backup doesnt work, because it doesnt re-instal the firmware.

just wanted to put that out there so people dont make the same mistake I did and spend 8 extra hours trying to get it to work :)

1. Try to boot tethered again. If that doesnt fix it...

2. Try to sync in itunes.. or...

3. Restore the ipod in itunes (reinstalls firmware) and then restore ipod from backup (you can do this in itunes or in the ipod after you restore). You will have to re-sync your apps and media, which takes a while, but thats the only way i know to fix everything...

A similar thing happened to me after I tried to use AptBackup (cydia app). It restarted and all my apps wouldn't show up, but after I restored and re synced everything works...

Sorry it didnt work on you... Are you on ios 5 or 5.0.1?
