Step 3: Lime Margarita Jello Shots


Limes and / or lemons
Lime jelly powder
Triple sec

Wash the limes and lemons. Cut the limes in half and squeeze out the juice. Turn the lime halves inside out and remove the pulpy bits. For lemons you can use a knife to cut out the insides.

Mix the jelly powder with 1 cup of boiling water. Stir until completely dissolved. Add 1/3 cup Triple Sec and 2/3 cup Tequila. Pour the liquid into the lime and lemon halves and chill in the fridge until set.

Before serving, cut the lime and lemon cups in half to make wedges. Right before eating you can dip the edges in sugar (like rimming a glass)

For the chocolate covered strawberries:<br><br>You could avoid cutting the bottoms off to stand them by dipping them in the chocolate bottom-side down, then resting them on waxed paper to dry. The chocolate will pool at the bottom making a stand. It would also prevent any liquids coming out the bottom.
You could probably candy the rinds as well and then they'd be fully edible.... Hmmm.....
This is a home shot. In transit, it will break down.
If you wanted more transportable versions, you could try making them in orange peels.

I tried making the margaritas for a party last weekend. The lime rind really messes with the taste. Am I doing something wrong?<br><br>I also made the gin and tonics. I wasn't a fan of the mini cucumbers, but the jello itself was awesome. I used a vegan 'gelatin' that actually sets better than the real stuff. <br><br>Thanks for posting this, I really want to start experimenting with different cocktails now!
Did you eat the lime rind? I didn't intend for the rind to be eaten (although technically it's edible), just tossed in the compost after you suck out the jello.<br> <br> I also tried making the gin and tonic jello in an ice cube tray and then putting those cubes on slices of English cucumber. It's a little messier to serve to guests as the jello would sometimes slide off, but it might be the way to go if you want less cucumber per shot.
Didn't eat them. But we could definitely taste it in the jello once it set.
Interesting, when I made them I tasted the jello before we poured the liquid into the rinds and the end result was pretty much the same.<br> <br> Perhaps it was the kind of limes you used or the age of the limes?<br> <br> Was the liquid still really hot when you poured it in? I find I get better results with jello if the liquid has cooled down before being poured into its container. If the liquid is still warm when it goes in the fridge the alcohol sometimes settles to the bottom.
I actually left some of the pulp in for a second batch, thinking maybe I just removed too much and it still happened. Next time I'll try it a little cooler, thanks for the advice. <br><br>Hell, experimenting is the best part!
How about making them with chocolate wine? And/or putting chocolate chips IN the shooters?
If, once you've trimmed the base off strawberries, you dip THAT end in melted choc and let it stand on greaseproof parchment, the choc forms a neat little puddle-shaped base when set, that stops the fruit falling sideways. It also seals the base in case of leaks! <br>By the way it helps to dab the fruit's trimmed end on absorbent kitchen paper just before dipping it in the choc, to dry it. Otherwise the choc slides off!
That's a great idea!<br> I didn't have much trouble keeping the strawberries standing up, but it would be really handy for fixing any berries that wind up with holes from overzealous trimming (I would just eat them when that happened to me).
HO! I think I just shot myself in the foot there didn't I! I should have thought of that great excuse to eat loads of 'overtrimmed' fruit... :)<br>And thanks for your lovely idea; in the UK we've just had the warmest-ever April, so our strawbs (usually not ripe till June) are in the shops already - and are really sweet thanks to the low rainfall this spring. I found your idea by searching for novel ways to use strawberries, now I'm hooked on this amazing site!
Very cool. I have over 200 shot glasses so I have never used the plastic cups but this makes it more fun. Can't wait to make some this way.

So the Shirley Temple I spired shots are 1/2 cherry &amp; 1/2 orange, per shot? Or did you make one 1/2 of the batch cherry and the second 1/2 of the batch orange? The final steps were a bit unclear as you specify the fill the cups only 1/2 full of the cherry liquid &amp; place the cherries. You specified to fill the cups (not sure if you meant the same cups) 1/2 full of the orange liquid, not saying whether the orange goes on top of the cherry, as you also made no mention of adding the cherries to the orange liquid (which leads me to believe both flavors get added to each cup).<br><br>Sorry, I hope this didn't come across as knitpickey, I just wanted to be certain of how to make these as they look amazing &amp; sound delicious. :)<br><br>Also, did you use a standard cupcake pan or minicupcake pan?
Thanks for the questions. I'll see if I can't make the instructions are little clearer.<br><br>I used a mini muffin/cupcake pan.<br><br>The shots are one layer of cherry with a layer of orange on top. The colours are so similar it's hard to see the two layers in the photos.
Could one add the lime/lemon juice &amp; pulp to the liquid for added zing or would it ruin the over all outcome? <br><br>If it shouldn't be added for one reason or another, do you have any other gadget concoctions in which it can be used (so it doesn't go to waste)?
I tried adding the lime juice to one batch and they turned out too sour for my tastes. You might be able to compensate by adding more sugar, but I just kept the juice to use in another recipe.

Absolutely brilliant ideas! I love playing with presentation ideas, and hate licking jell-o shots out of plastic cups. This is fantastic!
We use little paper cups, which we end up burning at the nights end to start our bonfire... So, we waste as little as possible. This all started when someone cut their tongue on a improperly made plastic cup rim... Oh the blood...<br><br>Anyway, the little paper cups don't last much longer than one night--so you have reason to eat them quick! Otherwise, we would let the shots sit until they were practically no alcohol left in 'em.<br><br>I get mine from GFS and it is $4 a 'tube' of like 200 or so.<br><br>I am so stealing all these recipes for next week's gathering. Muh-hahaha!
