Introduction: Jigsaw Puzzle Monogram Wall Art

About: I am Hazel's Dad - this is an account where I chronicle her making. It will be handed over to her when she is old enough to run it herself.

Hi, I'm Hazel and I'm a maker girl. We had a jigsaw puzzle with bits missing and rather than throw it away, I challenged myself to see what I could make with it! I created this wall art to put in my bedroom. If you use your initial for decorative purposes it is called a monogram. I love mine! You can use any colours, I picked pink and purple to match my bedroom. This is not difficult to make but it looks great!

Step 1: Gather Materials

You will need:

  • A canvas in whatever size you want your art to be
  • Jigsaw puzzle pieces
  • Premixed paint
  • A paintbrush
  • Hot glue gun

Step 2: Paint Your Jigsaw Puzzle Pieces

First, you need to paint your jigsaw puzzle pieces! There is no special technique to this, apart from - paint the reverse side!!! As the paint will adhere better to the back, and you won't have to worry about any of the original picture showing through.

Step 3: Start Gluing

You can use a pencil to trace an outline of your letter if you like. But an 'H' is quite easy to do without one so I didn't bother! I probably would have if my name began with a trickier letter like 'S'.

Begin to glue a bottom layer of puzzle pieces to your canvas with hot glue. You can do it randomly, or you can plan it. I liked the lilac colour best so I put mainly red and pink on the bottom layer and saved most of the lilac for the upper layers where they will be more visible.

Step 4: Build It Up...

Once you have got your base layer, you can start to place more puzzle pieces on top to form layers. Try to place them where there is lots of white space! You can build up three or four layers, just stop when you like the way it looks!

Step 5: Finished Artwork

Here is my finished monogram. I am going to put it on my bedroom wall but I need to have a hook fitted for it first. So I balanced it on the panelling to take a photo. I really like it, I hope that you do too!
