Hello there Supernatural fans and John Winchester appreciators!

This following tutorial shows you how I made my leather John Winchesters Journal (for my cosplay).
Enjoy Enjoy!

Step 1: References

First things first - get to know your stuff.
So I collected some screenshots and photos, made some notes and got a really big helping hand from 2 incredible blogs that are creating their journals, too.

*You can find the links at the end of this tutorial.

Keep in mind, that recreating every single thing of this book is a hell of a mess and work to do^^'
I absolutely love this! Would you consider taking pictures of the pages in your journal? I find the pictures on the two other blogs rather difficult to view and read. Also, did you write and draw on the pages yourself, or did you find a way to do it on a computer and print them out in the right scale?

Thanks,
Celina :o)

hey! idk if this is exactly what you want, but I found a page on pintrest with lots of good pictures of everything in the journal, including the pages, articles, pictures, etc. I also made a board of all the pages ive found, if you want to check that out.

https://www.pinterest.com/katymccarthy/journal/

https://www.pinterest.com/nicolehaskell1/sn-john-winchester-journal/

if you find a free way to get the blank pages from the journal, do you mind telling me? I just need a pdf file or something like that, bc I want to print them off and make each page myself. thank you, and I hope the links help!

Hi, thanks for your answer, I am now following both boards. If I find the blank pages, or decide to make them myself, I will happily send them to you :D

Hello,

Can I ask how much leather material you used and where you got it from - hardest challenge I am facing yet haha - FINDING THE MATERIALS!

Thanks

Hey Kimverley,
oh believe me I know!!D:
please have a look at the 'technical drawing' of the book. there you can see my meassurements and calculate every area 2x.this is is the total amount of leather you'd need.
The leather itself is from ebay. soit is a bit poker to find the right one. I prefer light brown to cognac color.
hugs.
Kion

Hi Kion,

Thanks for getting back to me. Yes it is very difficult to find the leather as most in USA and shipping is shocking to the UK! Been on loads of sites and still no luck but I'm not giving up! Definitely want to re-create one of the most important pieces of equipment from Supernatural!
Can't NOT have a journal!

Kimberley.

Hi! The British version of eBay has a lot of different and cheap leather pieces. Just search 'leather scraps' on ebay.co.uk :o)

no problem, Kimberley.
Mh yes it is pretty tough to find sth. espacially when shipping should be available for certain countries. Maybe you have some leather working shops close by or a shoemaker tht can give you some left overs?
Never give up! no hunter would ever give up ;)

Kion

oh god it's beautiful

How are the pages done? what kind of journal pages were used

I looked closel at some referenc pics and recreated the pages as accurate as possible with adobe indesigns.

HI THIS IS GREAT but i cant open the links at the end of the tutorial :(

sry. these are no links. just a hint what to look for

Wow Very cool instructable I have started making one myself :)

Where did you find these measurements or did you make them up? Are they close accurate to the one on the show? And thanks for the tutorial. =)

hex cat2,
I made them up, but used screenshots to get as close and accurate as possible. so this journal fits..well..me.
but i need to recalibrate the meassurement to make it easies with din normed paper

Could you post pictures of what the pages say, i am intrested in helping my friends make this journal as we are huge fans of the show, I have the leather part all done and sorted out, but i just need the inforrmation to fill it in. Please email me

Hey Emilee,
to get all the texts is nearly impossible. you have to add some of your own ideas and stories.
Still, it is hard work to get some original ones and figure some out by using screenshots.
Have a look at these two great blogs. I used and asked them for some things, too. You should find a zip data with a lot of screenshots at the 2nd one

1. DIY Johns Journal
2. Creating John Winchesters Journal

hello, I was wondering if the measurements for the leather will fit with this paper https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/170958616/supernatural-john-winchesters-journal-do

Hey,
comparing the meassurements of both my photo and the text of the etsy store pages they do NOT fit.
But feel free to use my photo as a guide and simply scale it up to your needs.

really nice replica. I only have one problem. I can't find the leather. I know you said you bought it from ebay but i still can't find any. can you put a link of the exact one you bought? hope it's not a problem

hello CLassyfangirl08

finding the right leather is not the easy pie thing, true. SO here is what i bought(german ebay). Maybe this is helpful :)

http://www.ebay.de/itm/LEDERHAUT-ANTIKLEDER-VINTAGELEDER-Hellbraun-10-/191337522478?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2047675.l2557&nma=true&si=2oPdq2gEz9CxErTp6bkREh4Ztc4%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc

I am going to be making one and this has been very helpful. I still have been wondering what the best place to find the army pins that are attached. Any suggestions?

hey hedelman,
try http://www.medalsofamerica.com/Item--i-B258
ebay or shops that sell military batches.
you'd need the silver rifle expert,

U.S. Army Aviation School Fort Rucker Pin,

Bronze Star Ribbon,

Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal,

Purple Heart Ribbon and

Vietnam Service Ribbon

Thank you so much for your help!

Do you have any tips on where to get a binder like that? All of the shops around me (US) are three-ring and the metal part is very long. This tutorial is lovely but that is the one thing that is keeping me back!

Hey there fellow huntress,
actually, consider yourself very lucky, because originally the shows journal is three-ringed!! I could find a soft plastic folder with 3 rings to use it for my journal ;____;
Any cheap online shops for me?
I myself use a simple soft plastic folder. no hard cover like you can find in any office.

http://www.pricehunter-shop.de/Produktfotos/idena/...

I trim it to the right size and cover it with leather.
I hope this is helpful and encouraging enough for you :) therwise don't hesitate to contact me again (more likly active here:

https://www.facebook.com/KionCosplay )

One more suggestion I forgot to add: You can always repurpose an old leather jacket from a thrift store.

Thank you so so much Macready! Thx for contributing to this instructable and sharing your info and help to everybody who would like to make one.(UK big talk ;) ) It's comments like these that bring us together and really make tutorials like these to nice small threads for help!
So go go UK - check out your possibilities to obtain leather, create your own journal and post me a photo of the finished piece <3

Beautiful work on the journal and with very comprehensive directions. I'd like to offer some suggestions on obtaining leather, though I'm in the US so I don't know how helpful I'll be to those in the UK. I've found leather at craft stores and fabric stores, which includes chains like Michaels. Tandy Leather is good; Their stuff is available both online and in-store. Check to see if there's a Tandy in your area (they have a store locator on their site). Failing that, see if there any small business leather shops in or near your city. I've found some great ones in the most obscure places. That said, you may need to use the 'ol phone book to find them.

Do you sell such self made items, too?
I'd be interested in buying one. ;)

hey SoraW,

thx for showing your interest in my work. I do comission this journal. Price depends on your choice of material and additional details.
Please check out

https://www.facebook.com/KionCosplay/photos/a.3594...
and contact me there for more info :D

How do you attach the strap? Do you glue it on the back or sew it? Also, How and when do you add the pockets?

Hey Rachel,

thx for the questions. Let me try to answere them as good as possible :D
1. I used superglue to put the strap on the journas back.but you can also shape it so you can sew the strap right onto it like the seam going aroung the book.
2. in step 3 you can see that the pockets are single and loose. you have to make and sew them before attaching them to the rest. In fact, sewing all aroung the journal is (excluding the strap) the very last step to do! this way the pockets are fixed with the main body of the journal and still be able to use.

I hope this helps you and please feel free to ask away more questions if so. :)

Should include a guide on how to get revenge on slenderman.
love the supernatural show nice A hunters diary
if you see crawly dont talk to him lol
haha thank you!
You mean the king of hell?
Well actually, he is my fav villain^^
http://ask-king-crowley.tumblr.com/
and this is my cosplay blog for crowley XD
