Picture of K'NEX Pinball Machine!
DCP_2834.JPG
It is a fully functional pinball machine, and easily one of my favorite knex builds. though it uses lots of pieces, it is worth it (unless you have to build a small one).

now be warned, i do not have step by step instructions since anyone who makes this will change it for there liking. the design is made so that you could make it as big or as small as you want it. because of this i only have clear pictures of everything already connected to the pinball machine(everything expect for part of the flippers and the track for the ball launcher are out in the open anyway, and easily seen). i have a description of each piece in the instructable and how it works so you can make it. everything is customizable so yours will most likely be different. but i still have a piece list to give you some idea of what yours will use.

_Kira_ made this using minimal white connecters, and made instructions here: www.instructables.com/id/Knex-Pinball-Machine-1/

just a big thing of blue rods connected with 3-D connectors. this is where most people will have to back out.

this part also decides the length and width of the pinball machine. mine has a width of 7 blue rods and length of 6 blue rods. this ended up leaving a surprisingly small space for the ball track but was big enough to work. when i made it i forgot to take into account the fact that the guard rails and flippers would take up space. but it still works.

one more thing you need to do is make the back one blue rod longer then then the front to give the pinball machine a angle so the ball rolls to the bottom.

some blue rods have been replaced with yellow connectors with green rods on opposite sides to equal the length of a blue rod. these yellow connectors will connect parts(mostly the flippers) to the machine so they need to be there.

if you look you will see that the blue rods extend in two squares at opposite ends oft the machine. the bottom one is were the ball goes when the game is over. that is a needed part (unless you hate losing). the other one is for a extra ball release i made but that is in another step.

pictures:
1. shows the blue rod connections(ignore the top white connectors.)
2. picture of the entire thing
3. picture of the end that gives the machine a angle.
4. bottom part that holds the ball when the game ends
5. different view showing the blue rod hook ups.

that is a cool pinball machine

it's hard to see how the flippers work, but thanks trying explaine it
dsman195276 (author)  kevkillerke4 years ago
Basically it works like a hinge. One side of the hinge is mounted on a rod, which can turn(the flipper is also on this rod, though a ways above the hinge). When you push on one side of the hinge, it causes the rod to rotate.

The second to last picture shows it well. The hinge is created by a white rod that is connected to the three orange connectors that are sticking out. When those three orange connectors are pushed in, it causes everything that the white rod is in to be pushed forward, rotating the flipper.
i have it now!
thanks a lot

not even a knex fan and this is AWESOME. great work!
same.
i made it it's awesome! i still had to make some changes to the flippers the balls couldn't get through
In about 3 weeks, I will post instructables on my double Decker pinball machine that is loaded with special mechanisms like automatic score system, wheel lift, duel flippers and underground ball plunger with auto ball dispenser. It has 5700 pieces and will take a little while to build. I hope all of you will enjoy building it:)
I followed this instructable and modified it a little to make it have a second floor on the upper half with two sets of flippers controlled at once and a wheel lift in the back. I also added a automatic ball dispenser in the plunger with space for 3 balls. I might post the video of it in a little while. I give you most of the credit though!

this is awesome! just made it,took me like 8hrs.lol much worth the time though!!
mulletman63 years ago
Just made this and its rather kool. Haven't got the ball pusher thing to work properly yet tho. Don't see why everyone is having a problem with the flippers - they were easy to make :)
dsman195276 (author)  mulletman63 years ago
That's really great to hear! which part of the ball pusher won't work? It might be you just need stronger rubber bands on it.

DSMan195276
Yeah, that was my problem :P - i put one of the black knex rubber bands on it and it works a treat :). I added another rail bit to the underneath of the whole "machine", so that the ball that hits the ball release rolls down the underneath of the "machine" and stops under the "part that holds the ball when the game ends" :)

=O

i could never have thought of something like that
ingenious!

this looks bloody awesome...
gonna go make it now

why do you have only 3.85 stars ??

WTF THIS IS GREAT !! YOU SHOULD HAVE AT LEATS 4.5 STARS !!
dsman195276 (author)  Dirtyboyy4 years ago
 Thanks, that means a lot.

As for you question, I don't know. I don't really worry about my ratings as most are biased from preconceptions people already have before looking at the instructable. The fact is, most people have a idea on what rating the instructable will get the second they see it on the list. And most who rate it 5 stars still haven't read the entire thing, which makes there rating not completly truthful.

From what the rating system says, a 5 star would mean best ever, and I really don't believe this is the best ever. Everything has it's problems, such as the flippers on this might break if you slam on them to hard.

And thats probably why i just stay away from the rating system altogether...
KnexFreek4 years ago
wtf why isnt this one page 1?

(ps dont ask me if i rated, i gave it 5 stars about a month ago lol)
dsman195276 (author)  KnexFreek4 years ago
I just checked, and it turns out this is the first instructable on page 2. It ties the last instructable on the page before.

oh, well do you wnt to know how to get on page one? without doing anything bad !!!! i will tell u in a pm if ya want
dsman195276 (author)  KnexFreek4 years ago
Nah, i don't care about ratings.

no, it doesnt change the rating!!!! listen, just do this:
go to edit
click publish
then in the space where it says to choose a category, choose knex for both!
done!
dsman195276 (author)  KnexFreek4 years ago
Ok, i'll ask.
Why the heck did that work?

I DONT KNOW !!!!!! LOL BUT IT DOES!!!!! Did you do it? ill go check :)
can you show how to build it like step by step instructions
dsman195276 (author)  mattiscool1145 years ago
sorry, but step by step would be way to hard and long. really, in essence the thing is pretty simple. just look at it and you see how it is all made. the other parts that are needed(like flippers and ball launcher) are pretty easy and should be easy to make from the pictures. after that, all you have to do is add the sides, and all the fun parts.
Please I like it very much if you make a step by step instructable 4 us.!!

please?!?
hi I like your idea and all but could you possibly put up some step-by-step instructions.:)
please post instructions for the base myeyes arnt the best
dsman195276 (author)  cooldude2468105 years ago
thanks, but please read the paragraph in the intro.
gerrits134 years ago
built is awesome but the left flipper the rubber band made it harder to move so i increased the left side one blue rod more and changed pieces so it is a mirrored image of the right flipper
dsman195276 (author)  gerrits134 years ago
Sounds good. I can't personally remember a problem with the left flipper, but I do remember I had to balance the flipper rubberbands.

Any pictures?
_kira_5 years ago
I thought that the flippers were gonna be hard! Hah they were the easiest part so far.
grevious6 years ago
why dont u try a mesh of elastic bands that when the ball hits it it bounces off lol? id make this and do it but i dont have enough pieces =[
dsman195276 (author)  grevious6 years ago
in real pinball machines the rubber bands are just for show, there is a piston under the rubberbands that pushes them out. on this, it just makes the ball bounce a little.
yeah but can you make a piston out of knex? this is the next best thing
