Kids Crayon Wrap Holder Gift for Under $3.00!!

Hello everyone! I hope your holidays went fantastic! Mine was hectic and full of handmaking gifts for family and friends! It paid off in the end because everyone loved their gifts. That makes me feel great inside;)  Now I want to pass on some of the gifts I made to you.

These are my instructions for a "Kids Crayon Wrap". I wanted to make something for my cousin's little kiddos and did a search for kids unique handmade gifts on the net. This is one of the cuter ones that came up. It was on Etsy for sale and, even thought the price was ok at twelve bucks, I decided that since I needed 7 of them that I'd try to make them on my own. I took a good long look at the one for sale and figured out a way to make my own.

Here are the very easy steps in which to make your own.

Step 1: Getting Your Supplies Ready!

Here is what you will need:

• Fabric in two colors/patterns that coordinate. 1 in a busy pattern and 1 in a more subdued or plain pattern.
• Ribbon
• Scissors
• Measuring Tape
• Straight Pins
• Matching Thread
• 8 Crayons
• Sewing Machine (Optional- this can be hand sewn)
• Iron/ Ironing Board (Optional but a huge help)

Step 2: Measuring, Cutting & Pinning OH MY! Lol

Let's get to measuring!

Grab your busy pattern fabric which will be the dominate fabric and be seen on the outside.

Let's measure for the crayon size you will be using. I used regular run of the mill crayons so my cuts were
8 1/2 inches long by 7 inches high.

Once that is cut move on to your plain fabric and cut 8 1/2 inches long by 5 inches high.

Take both fabrics and fold in the sides and bottom in about 1/2 an inch and iron flat (see photos). Take your top busy fabric and fold the top down 2 1/2 inches making this fabric now 4 inches tall. Iron that as well. Take your plain fabric and fold it in half and iron. If you've decided not to use an iron then skip this and go straight to pinning your fabric down 1/2 inch in.

Now that you have ironed your 1/2 inch down (this is where you will sew your seam) it's time to pin it and get ready to sew.

(Hint: Cut a notch in the folds so your fold will lay flat and not bunch up. This will make it look professional as well. See photos.)

Pin your fabric fold down every few inches to ensure that once you start sewing, your project will turn out as desired. You will also want to get your ribbon pinned. Cut your ribbon to a nice long size. I cut mine 16 inches long and folded it in half. Once it's folded in half you want to pin it above the plain fabric about a quarter inch in. You want to make sure that it is inside enough to be sewn through with the seam.

Step 3: Sew Perfect!

Now it's time to put it all together! Sew your sides, top and bottom folds down leaving a quarter inch seam (sew a quarter inch from the edge all the way around).

Sew each pocket 5/8 an inch. (If using a sewing machine it will show you a ruler in which you can make your measurements. This is how I did mine. I lined up each sew line with the 5/8 inch mark on my sewing machine and followed it up.)

Continue this until you have 8 crayon pockets and stop. The last pocket (number 9) will be bigger and fit either a crayon sharpener or an eraser.

I like to sew a couple more stitches in the ribbon closer to the edge of the fabric to hold the ribbon tight and when you go to tie the ribbon the extra stitches keep the ribbon from splitting the fabric open. Looks much nicer!

Step 4: That's a Wrap!!

Here it is! The end of another instructable.. I know.. It make me a little sad too.. But like all good things.. this must end as well.. The best part is that now we have a wonderful new toy for a special little boy or girl! Just add crayons and roll up. Make sure you tie a little bow with the ribbon and your set. I hope you had fun! (Tip: you can add a name to the front with fabric paint or cross stitch! I added the cross stitch method for the little kiddo's on my list.It didn't take long and it was super cute!)
