Kid's Hockey Game

Another great project for an Auntie! What kid doesn't love hockey?

As this is meant for a toddler, I crocheted a covering for the hockey stick in consideration of my sister's floor (and sanity). My nephew is quite fond of hitting things with sticks.

Step 1: Materials and Tools

Materials

• Thin plywood - I used about a quarter of a 20x32" piece of 0.2" thick birch plywood
• Yarn
• Stuffing
• Sandpaper
• Strong wood glue

Tools

• Laser cutter (or some other method to cut out the hockey stick shape)
• Crochet hook - I used a 4mm hook

Step 2: Design and Cut

I downloaded a simple hockey stick logo by Anbileru Adaleru from the noun project and shortened the stick length a little bit. Feel free to use the attached design.

Step 3: Glue and Sand

In order to make the stick stronger, I stuck two cut outs of the hockey stick together with strong wood glue.

After it dried, I sanded all of the edges to get off the excess glue and round the corners of the wood slightly.

Step 4: Crochet Ball

I'm a beginner at crochet so I found a video to help me make the ball: follow these instructions or:

1. Make a magic ring
2. Chain one
3. Single crochet 6 inside the loop
4. Tighten the ring together
5. Round 1: 2 single crochet in each stitch (total 12)
6. Round 2: 1 single crochet in the next stitch and 2 single crochet in next - repeat pattern for full round (total 18)
7. Rounds 4-6: 1 single crochet in each stitch (total 18)
8. Round 7: 1 single crochet in the next stitch and then single crochet 2 together - repeat pattern for full round (total 12)
9. Stuff the ball tightly with filling
10. Round 8: skip 1 stitch, 1 single crochet, skip stitch, etc.for full round (total 6)
11. Chain 1
12. Cut off yarn and pull through.
13. Using a tapestry needle, weave the end through and close the small hole left in the ball.

Step 5: Crochet Stick Cover

I made this pattern up to fit the hockey stick. Again, I'm a beginner at crochet so you might have better methods.

You could also buy a sock and use the sock instead.

I took pictures throughout the process in the GIF so you should be able to see what I'm talking about in the steps below.

1. Chain 9
2. Looping back into chain 8 - single crochet in each stitch.
3. Chain 1 (this gives you flexibility to turn the corner
4. Continuing to work as if you are dealing with an oval, put the next single crochet into the single yarn that is the backside of the first chain of 9.
5. Single crochet down the back of the oval (8 stitches).
6. Chain 1 to give flexibility to turn the corner.
7. Do 25 rounds of single crochet. Make sure to measure your stick cover up to your wooden hockey stick to check the length. I needed 25 rounds, but you might need more or less depending on your yarn, hook, and stitch tightness.
8. On round 26 stop when you are 2 stitches away from completing the round.
9. Chain 1.
10. Loop around and single crochet back the way that you came. Stop 3 stitches away from completing the round.
11. Chain 1.
12. Loop around and single crochet back the way that you came. Stop 4 stitches away from completing the round.
13. Chain 1.
14. Now single crochet around the entire top edge of the hockey stick cover.
15. Chain 1
16. Cut off yarn and pull through. Leave the end long.

Step 6: Assemble

Pull the hockey stick cover onto the wooden stick. Using the tail end of your crochet yarn and a tapestry needle, weave the end around the top edge and pull it tight together to ensure that the stick cover will stay on.

If you think it is needed, you can put a small amount of glue around the top edge to keep the hockey stick cover in place.

Then, put a few lines of glue on your stick handle and wind a piece of yarn around it until you have a hand grip.

That's all there is to it.
