Very cool, but I think what Mrmath said is true, and also doing this on a US flight may be a federal crime.
Thanks, I think it's cool also. GPS receivers are, well, receivers. Cell phones are quite different as they are very strong transmitters. Prohibiting cell phones on planes makes sense as they must reach the base stations and when they can't 'see' one they pull up the power a lot until they find one (in fact keeping a cell phone powered on where there's no field at all drains the batteries very quickly). Also, if any EMI is emitted it must be within the FCC limits (as stated on the receiver) and must be very low because EMI power is not free and the very small batteries last 8 hours. They key is how much power is available for emitting for any device. Laptop PCs definitely drain more power and emit more EMI than a GPS receiver (though being them both not transmitters).

I'm pretty sure that most flights in the US would NOT allow you to use your GPS. Definitely something you should ask about before doing.
As long as it only receives and doesn't transmit it's perfectly safe and legal, if you were transmitting on GPS channels you'd be causing hell, mainly because planes do use that same GPS system as one of their navigating systems. It's true that you wouldn't be allowed to do this during take-off and landing, for some reason there is a rule about no electronics being on at all, either a change in used radio frequencies or it's just not a good plan...

I personally think the whole electronics thing is so people don't have their laptops on their laps, and their headphones in their ears. Laptops would get in the way of "escaping", and headphones would possibly put people in their own little worlds. I don't think there's anything that we do that disturbs the pilots. But, I could be dead wrong. Since I would rather just be wrong, and not dead wrong, I always have my stuff turned off.
Well I know that mobiles will do little even when calling during flight, my father used to fly, the only issues you had was that familiar little tune of interference but that's not radio interference but wires to headphones and other speakers acting as antennae as far as I know... No catastrophes and this was with the 34th phone in northern Ireland, you could probably dry your hair with it or cook a rustler's...
I understand there are differences in the tech used but your theory is plausible and I agree about the kind of wrong but not dead wrong...
I remember last time I was dead wrong, not up for that again
