Introduction: K'nex Ball Machine Maze Mania W/ Instructions

Picture of K'nex Ball Machine Maze Mania W/ Instructions

Hello! After building many ball machines from this site, I have finally created my own. This ball machine is about 2 feet 2.5 inches tall (0.67 meters tall) and 1 foot 1.5 inches wide (0.34 meters wide). This took about a day and a half to create. Maze Mania has 2 paths, each that have a maze in it. (Get it? It's called Maze Mania because all of the elements are mazes.) This is my first instructable and my first custom ball machine. If you would like to build this, then proceed to the next step. Make sure to follow all image notes, as there is some important information in them. If you make this, post a picture in the comments and I'll add it to the last step! Also, if anything isn't clear or if you have any questions, leave a comment and I will try to respond as soon as possible. I hope you enjoy!

Step 1: Piece Count

You can't build this without all the pieces, can you? Here's the list of parts you'll need. All pieces are listed in the color I used, but you don't need to follow the color-code.

Blue Rods: 293

Yellow Rods: 112

Green Rods: 155

White Rods: 82

Red Rods: 7

Blue 3-D Connectors: 106

Gray 3-D Connectors: 178

Green Connectors: 1

Orange Connectors: 32

Gray Connectors: 5

Purple Connectors: 23

White Connectors: 19

Red Connectors: 32

Yellow Connectors: 70

Chain Links: 49

Black Y-Clips: 6

Blue Clips: 5

Tan Clips: 2

Red Gears: 6

Motor (Newer Green One): 1

Purple Flexi-Rod (Optional): 1

Blue Spacer: 24

Silver Spacer: 23

Older K'nex Balls: 2

Grand Total

1,333 Pieces

Step 2: The Base

Picture of The Base

This is the easiest part of this ball machine. Just build what you see. Keep the connectors in picture 5 open! (This allows the chain to pass through them.)

Step 3: The Main Tower, Ball Queue, and Path Selector

Picture of The Main Tower, Ball Queue, and Path Selector

Phew! That was a big step! Give yourself a pat on the back if you finished this step. You deserve it! Make sure to read all of the image notes here, because there are a lot of things to pay attention to. Now, onto the next (and a smaller) step!

Step 4: The Chain Lift

Picture of The Chain Lift

A quick step. The final connection of the chain on the machine is a bit tight, but if you add a link the chain can't carry the balls. Only 1 more step before the paths!

Step 5: Supports and Return Tracks

Picture of Supports and Return Tracks

This is another big step. But now it's time for the paths! Yay! If you roll a ball down the path 2 return track now, it might fall out of the ball queue. This problem is fixed later. Onto the next step!

Step 6: Path 1- the Maze

Picture of Path 1- the Maze

At last, it's time for the paths! Path 1 is a maze that the ball randomly falls through. This was first used on the Trampoline Tower, but since I don't have that set, I used instructions from Sorunome's project Fab.The 2 wheels are optional. If you choose to use them, you need to manually push them away from the edges of the maze. If you try to fix them in 1 place, the balls will get stuck. Now it's time for the last step!

Step 7: Path 2- the Plinko Board

Picture of Path 2- the Plinko Board

This is the last, but coolest, path on the machine. On this path, the ball rolls through the Plinko Board and then onto a track that takes the ball back to the return track. I bet you're wondering what those orange connectors are for. I'll tell you: At first with this board, I had nothing where those orange connectors were, so the ball fell through at times. I attempted to fix this problem, but the ball would just get stuck every time. I thought that the ball was just going to have to fall through, but when I put the connectors on, they pushed the ball back onto the track without the ball getting stuck. I call it the Tassel Block because they look like tassels and it blocks the ball. I'm sorry for the blurry pictures in this section. But, you just finished! Great job!

Step 8: Finish!

Great job on completing Maze Mania! I would like to thank any ball machine builder that saw some of their work here. If you have any questions or if something's not clear in the instructions, just leave a comment. Also, if you build this, put a picture in the comments and I'll add it to this step! Thanks for viewing, and I hope you enjoyed!

Koogee builds made it! (author)2017-10-08

Here is the video of the Maze Mania that I just finished building. I tried to copy the video to the message. But just in case that doesn't work, here is the Youtube link as well.

That is awesome! Thanks so much for sharing. Would it be okay with you if I added the video or an image to the last step of the instructable?

Sure go ahead. It's OK with me.

Knex2thelimit (author)2017-06-20

Awesome! Could you try re-attatching the video? It doesn't seem to work for me.

Looks neat!

check out the video to see it in action. :)

Nice vid! The text looks cool, did you make it yourself?

Thanks! No, the text (And the transitions) were all created by iMovie. (I used the trailer portion cause' I knew this was going to be a short video) :p

ok nice, still cool video :)

Thanks! Can't wait to see your next ball machine. ;)

Coming soon! :D

How soon? My next ball machine is coming soon as well.

I'm working on the video at the moment. If you post your new machine after the 30th of june, you can enter it in the upcoming knex contest. So mine won't be online before the end of june ;)

contest? wow i just finished building mine with instructions so i should publish it AFTER june 30th?

Yeah, somewhere around that date, you'll hear about it. But don't publish it now if you want to enter it, only instructubles published after that date are accepted.

I just finished making the instructable, saved it, but I haven't published it. does that mean I can still enter it?

Absolutely :)

If you're entering I have no chance of winning :P

Maybe, but there are always runner up prizes :)

What are the odds of a 1785 piece ball machine to win anything?

Knex2thelimit (author)knex akbar2014-06-28

I'm not sure. It all depends on design, the judges, instructable members, etc.

knex akbar (author)Knex2thelimit2014-06-29

I just published the machine that I would enter because it's too simple, I'm making a bigger one instead with as many different paths as I can put in.

Good, but it's not only about ball machines. The previous contest had different categories.

that's true. I just came back from antique shopping, and I purchased what I thought was going to be the knex lost mines power crane. Nope. But I don't care! I got a HUGE amount of pieces and some motors that I've been wanting! So exited!

Cool! Always useful for a new ball machine.

Let' see... 9 large yellow gears; 9 knex men; 4 huge wheels... 1 super fast battery silver motor; 1 plug-into-the-wall motor with its gear; some parts for this robot set (odd); and a ton of other stuff.

Sounds like a lot :p

Yep. :p

Ahh I see. I'm not sure if I'll enter my new ball machine or not. Will you tell me the name of your next ball machine, or do you want it secret until after June 30th?

Sorry I'm not going to tell it already ;)

I thought you would say that. BTW, I'm using your jump lift in my next ball machine! Would you like a picture of it cause' it's your lift? ;)

Ah nice to hear! A picture would be nice, then I can add it to the instructable of the lift.

Sounds good! The pictures are on the instructable of the jump lift. :)

Let's add them :)

with instructions?

No, no one would actually build it, I don't know yet how many pieces I used for it, but quite a lot.

WRONG! I would build it in a heartbeat if it was a ball machine and if I had enough parts! :)

But do you have enough parts? ;)

My guess is no. You have way more parts than most people. But if I did have enough parts then I would. :p

Knex2thelimit (author)knex akbar2014-06-26

I'm guessing he's going to say no. His creations are huge.

Sorunome (author)2014-06-19

Looking nice!

Do you have a vid of it? :)

Knex2thelimit (author)Sorunome2014-06-19

Thank you! I don't have a video yet, I can make one though.

The video will hopefully be posted this weekend! :)

Sorunome (author)Knex2thelimit2014-06-19

yaaay, looking forward to it :)

Knex2thelimit (author)Sorunome2014-06-24

Sorry that the video hasn't been posted yet; it's just taking a little longer than I had thought it would. Hopefully it will be posted tonight.

Sorunome (author)Knex2thelimit2014-06-24

No worries, it can wait ;)
