This is a miter saw I built for a contest. The blade spins and can cut paper. The best part about it is that the blade guard lifts up automatically as you push the saw down, just like the real thing. Plus, it's huge, heavy, and uses lots of flexi-rods. :-)

Here's how it works; when you push the saw down, fishing line gets reeled out in the back. A shaft turns, which is geared up so another shaft spins faster. Another strand of fishing line is attached to this shaft. When one strand of fishing line gets pulled out, another gets pulled in at a faster rate. One strand goes through the base and up into the saw, going through many wheels (yes, this was very hard to put through the wheels). There's also rubber bands that help reset everything.

Here are the instructions!

Here is the complete parts list, plus deconstruction pictures!

Here's the video:

cool
I managed to rebuild this thing exactly including the blade guard!
Cool! :-) Did construction go well?
Very nice design, Keep up the great work! 5/5 stars!
Put your finger under it! (I dare you).
It wouldn't hurt :-P
Well... BTW you're my 1500th commenter!
OH
MY
GOSH
That looks like it took a LONG time.
Thanks! It only took 2 days. :-)
2 days..
then why don't you rebuild and post it?
I don't have any white rods, I ran out of them on my current project. I bought 1000 from ebay, but I have to return them because they were dirty and discolored. :-(
ok but wil you ever post this?
wow!
nice thing!
This thing is AWSOME!!!!!!!!5*
Ho. Lee. Crap.

This thing is a BEAST. Have you ever tried cutting anything stronger then paper, like cardboard? Or a finger........ What! You got ten of 'em...... Lol, just kidding.
Thanks! I highly doubt it would have cut anything thicker than paper.
Your welcome :)

Have you ever thought about using something more powerful for the motor, like, say, a drill?
I never thought about using a drill, but I rather use a different motor, like a motor to a weed eater. :-)
Or a chainsaw! Heh heh, that saw would going at like 1,000 RPS!!

But, a weed eater is good, too. I bet you could also sharpen the pieces a little bit more.

Not to ruin your 'ible or anything. Just trying to give you ideas to see if you could make it better.
5*! You should have shown it cutting through something though. Still, this is epic!!!
Thanks! I never thought of showing it cutting something in the video.
thats really cool!thats cool as !$@$
This is so cool!!=D (WAAAYYYY better than mine!!=D)
:O oh buddy this thing is awesome!!!!! i was just about to design one when i seen yours. Great Job, i'm going to try and make one that angles and bevels. 5* keep up the good work!!
Cool. Maybe you could add a k'nex motor with a placeable power switch so that the switch is activated when you lower the saw turning the blade? 5* keep up the good work!
Thanks, that's a good idea.
could you try to rebuild it than post it
Will you be posting?
No, this is long gone. Sorry.
WTF. I can't believe I didn't comment on this, excellent job as always buddy. :-)
Lol, thanks!
Pro :D Does it cut anything:P
Thanks, it cut paper.
Lol cool
this just shows pure skill!!!!! nice!
