UPDATED: New gun design and instructable steps, 08 april

Minor Update, 12 april: Ive redesigned the firing levers to stop misfires. The changes are very small but important. The very last section has a photo of the modifications.

I agree with the comments saying the gun was too bulky. Ive remade it into a much more compact and powerful design. The first few steps are the same, but theres more ones been added to show the new design. Ive also got a video of the gun firing.

=======================================================================

I will begin this with the obligigatory "my first instructable etc....". With that out the way, onto the gun. (by the way, I know my username is spelled wrong).

This gun holds 8 shots, and will fire them as fast as you can pull the trigger. It can fire several types of connector. Using two bands per shot, it fires about 30-40 feet, though It has the potential for much more.

It does not require many "exotic" parts, however you do need quite alot of bands. I needed 19: 16 for the barrel, 1 for the barrel spinner, and 2 for the trigger return mechanism.

The basic idea is that the barrel holds the 8 shots in a ring. The barrel is tensioned by a band which makes it rotate betweeen each shot. When you pull the trigger, a level flicks one shot out of the barrel, and at the same time moves a ratchet which advances the barrel one "click", lining up the next shot. This mechanism can work very quickly- I can fire off all 8 shots in under two seconds.

Note: If you fire this at hard surfaces, it tends to break parts off the ammo. Also, the shots rebound very easily and can hurt if they hit you.

Step 1: The Barrel

First off you need to make the barrel. Its a pretty simple structure.

The first picture shows how you should fix two elastic bands into the connector(sorry for the blurry photo. The rest are much better). Make this part eight times, then build it up into the barrel shown in the second and third picture.

You might need a different number of bands depending on what type you have.

Nice job :) Definitely favorited for possible later build.

This isn't treu semi auto. This is Pseudo Semi-Auto.

The reason for this is that you need to pull back something for every single shot. For this you have to pull rubber bands back 8 times for 8 shots so it's not true semi-auto.

If it shot automatically without pulling anything except the trigger to fire, than this would be semi-auto.

Please change it to prevent confusion for other KNexers.

:| Focus on the gun, not what kind of auto it is

i love overcomplicated and eccentrically silly designs like this. i mean this in a good way because ive been looking for a knex revolver that automatically indexes the cylinder in the same way this does. good job! :D

Just a pseudo semi-auto.

Deffinition of a semi-auto
ProjectIsle (author) says: Apr 10, 2008. 1:14 PM
I was under the impression that 1 trigger pull=1 shot meant it was semi auto. From reading around on this site, Ive gathered that its impossible to have a true semi auto knex gun since you cant use the energy of the shot to load the next one. Using a seperate band to rotate the barrel seems like the only way to make it work.

Thats just my opinion anyway. Should I change the title of the instructable to stop people thinking its a "true" semi auto?
oodalumps says: Apr 10, 2008. 5:33 PM
Pseudo semi-auto still has "semi-auto" in the name. So leave it as it is. And it wasn't the band rotating the barrel that was the problem. It was the fact that you have to pull a rubber band back for each bullet to make it work.
ProjectIsle (author) says: Apr 11, 2008. 1:57 AM
OK that makes sense now. Thanks for the info.

Is this a wait is it a???? RBG gatlin gun? it looks like it
ProjectIsle (author) says: Apr 7, 2008. 5:34 PM
It fires connectors, the bands are fixed to the end of the barrel
mrbox says: Apr 7, 2008. 5:40 PM
Oh okay =/ Great instructable though.. I thought it was an RBG gatlin gun at first when i saw what I thought was a rotating barrel with rubberbands on it =(
Well Ill give ya a rating of the gun while im typing... The design is great... Power is fair but if ya could im not saying anything mean maybe make a more compact version of this =) But it may be too hard to do Its just a suggestion...

Great Instructable +1 I hope you build more great knex guns ;D!
ProjectIsle (author) says: Apr 7, 2008. 5:49 PM
I appreciate that the gun is pretty bulky. Its hard to get all the moving parts in without it being flimsy. Ill try to build a more compact version- I think the problem is the barrel tensioner takes up alot of space that it doesnt really need too. I do have a couple more guns lying around which I might post- you can see part of a bolt action disc launcher in the 3rd last picture.
