Introduction: K'nex C.A.R. : Compact Assault Rifle

Picture of K'nex C.A.R. : Compact Assault Rifle
Hi there.
My most recent K'nex creation is this gun, the C.A.R.
This stands for Compact Assault Rifle, which it would be, if it shot.
However, this is a non-shooting gun, I made when I was bored a couple of days ago.
It feautures:
- Moving charging handle and trigger
- Compact
- Removable magazines
- Sort of comfortable (my hands are too large for the handle)
- Foregrip
- Pretty good looks IMO
- A bolt catch (idea by The Dunkis
- A magazine release, closer to the trigger (but still behind the handle) (idea by The Dunkis)

That's about it.
Sorry for the blurry-ish photos
Less blurry photos have been added, with most of the old ones removed

Edit 2
The Dunkis had two ideas to put into this gun:
- A bolt catch, to keep the charging handle backwards, and a seperate trigger / button to release it.
- A magazine release trigger / button close to the trigger.

The first idea is successfully incorporated into the gun. It's a small button you push forwards to release the charging handle.
The second idea is a bit different. The trigger for the magazine release is behind the handle, and you pull it with your thumb to release the magazine.

Video that shows what it does:

And a video that shows the new bolt catch and mag release:

hey doc i love your new gun and am Itching to build it why dont you give instructions. and only then your gun can get to legendary positions and years from now there will be stories of C.A.R the legendary super gun

Zombiekiller-93 (author)evok2015-11-11

Hey evok, if you need instructions for the C.A.R, I have them on my profile

gassybeans (author)2013-11-12

Hmmm. Doesn't look too terribly compact haha!!! Oh well. It looks marvelous! I do believe a post... Is maybe in order? Does it shoot? 0.o

dr. richtofen (author)gassybeans2013-11-13

It felt pretty compact when I held it :p
I could build it again and post if you want, but it doesn't shoot.

gassybeans (author)dr. richtofen2013-11-13

I could modify it! So yes please :) or just show internals. like... layer by layer? Thats easy enough for me to build. I've already got the body panels built, but its the ram, catch, mag stuff and internals i don't understand worth beans. Haha beeaannsss.

dr. richtofen (author)gassybeans2013-11-13

I'll build it again this afternoon, or tomorrow.

gassybeans (author)dr. richtofen2013-12-07

That was 24 DAYS AGO MAN! haha...

dr. richtofen (author)gassybeans2013-12-07

Sorry :/
I haven't felt like knexing in a while, and work that lured around the corner.
I have a couple of days without work ahead, maybe I'll finally get around to building it.
Sorry for the wait :(

I am more intrigued by the guitar in the background. Where'd ya get it?

dr. richtofen (author)nfk112013-08-22

Lol. I bought the guitar on a Dutch site that sells lots of stuff related to music.

nfk11 (author)dr. richtofen2013-08-23

cool. I have an epiphone special. Got it at a music store in America. And what is the time difference between Europe and Asia?

dr. richtofen (author)nfk112013-08-23

Ah, that guitar is pretty cool. Mine is an LTD EX-50.
What kind of music do you play,
Btw: I don't know the difference between Europe and Asia, but the difference between the Netherlands and America is about 6 hours (with NL 6 hours ahead)

nfk11 (author)dr. richtofen2013-08-23

I play rock, and some beatles.

I guess Koreas is probably 8 hours ahead. We are 14 hours ahead of Murica.

dr. richtofen (author)nfk112013-09-01

Ah, okay. I myself mostly play black metal riffs, and other metally stuff, along some MLP songs
Weird that I haven't gotten a mail saying you typed this reply :/

nfk11 (author)dr. richtofen2013-09-07

Weird. I wish I could play mlp songs. But I can't!

dr. richtofen (author)nfk112013-09-09

Haven't gotten a message again :/
Anyway, I learned the MLP via tabs I found here
almost got giggle at the ghosties down :p

Vaetheon (author)2013-08-13

Very cool man

megustatrains (author)2013-08-16

So... were did the wheels go? D: i really thought this was a vehicle at first. lol

Element Force (author)2013-08-18

Je hebt het heel goed gedaan op deze gun! het ziet er echt goed!

Hehe, you don't have to google translate stuff to say it in Dutch, you get broken grammar that way ;)

LOL. I just whant to impressed you XD.

nathanial1 (author)2013-08-12

Cinda pointless if it doesn't soot

dr. richtofen (author)nathanial12013-08-12

That's where we differ in opinion.
To you, it's pointless, 'cause it lacks a shooting function. That's okay, shooting ones are fun.

To me, this was to build something for fun, not caring about ranges etc. It has some functions, enough to mess around with.

nathanial1 (author)dr. richtofen2013-08-13

Have u ever attempted a rbg :)

dr. richtofen (author)nathanial12013-08-13

Yeah, but guns shooting RBG's normally get meh ranges, and I don't have enough rubberbands left :/

nfk11 (author)dr. richtofen2013-08-20

nathaniel, it is 'kinda' not 'cinda'. Mike has better grammar than you, and he is from the netherlands.

TheDunkis (author)2013-08-13

Decided to have a spin at a just for fun model weapon too? Looks like it still took heavy inspiration from mine, but is also different enough in a lot of cool ways. I like the new grip you got going for example. Also, you should move the charging handle up farther. Mine was only in the middle because of the way I set up my front, but you have plenty of room. Most modern assault rifles are more ergonomic with a charging handle located closer to the front. Also, what you could try doing just for fun is setting up a separate sear trigger for the charging handle so that it has a bolt catch like a real gun. It could be a switch or button on the side of the gun to release the bolt if you cock it all the way back like as if you were reloading.

dr. richtofen (author)TheDunkis2013-08-14

Yeah, I really liked how your rifle looked, so it is a bit similar. And that charging handle you used, it allows for a good functioning one, without having a large hole in the side panels.
I'll place the charging handle forward today, and try if I can get a working bolt catch for it.
Thanks for the comment and ideas for it.

TheDunkis (author)dr. richtofen2013-08-14

Yeah, I think I'll post mine in a forum now because I originally wanted to keep it a secret if it were to become a firing weapon, but it never did. And yeah, I wish I could find a use for this charging handle. You could make it cock a weak weapon, but it wouldn't be practical.
Awesome, can't wait to see it. I really do like the design of this one. It's similar in how it looks like a sci-fi kind of weapon but is completely feasible as a real weapon design. Also didn't you have a concept for a mag release up by the trigger? Try giving that a go, it'd be awesome. I think I'll make another fake model except make it smaller like a PDR and try to incorporate more features.

dr. richtofen (author)TheDunkis2013-08-16

Well, turns out the bolt lock was pretty easy, I'll include a demonstrating video on this slideshow.
The mag release close by the trigger will be hard, as the trigger guard is pretty cramped now, with the trigger, and in front of that the bolt lock trigger.

TheDunkis (author)dr. richtofen2013-08-16

That's what I was figuring. Bolt lock is just like a second trigger really, it's just how you activate it is where the creativity comes in. And I didn't really know if it would be possible to throw in the mag release because it is a tricky thing. Not many bullpups other than the PDR do I know even try to have a mag release not by the magwell.

dr. richtofen (author)TheDunkis2013-08-16

I'm not sure if the new video is showing for everyone, but I managed to get the bolt lock working good, and the new mag release is behind the handle, activate by pulling it with your thumb.

How is yours coming along? I saw on your forum that you also wanted to put the bolt lock and mag release in it.

TheDunkis (author)dr. richtofen2013-08-16

And I didn't get to start mine yet after all. Just a lot of house work getting in my way. And I keep changing my mind on what I want it to be.

dr. richtofen (author)TheDunkis2013-08-17

Yeah. I almost always upload a video that shows what the gun does. Anyway, here's the one that shows its bolt catch and magazine release.

kay, that's understandable, just take your time for it.

TheDunkis (author)dr. richtofen2013-08-17

Very impressive. Good job.

Perhaps I'll do it this afternoon. Still deciding on what I want it to look like.

dr. richtofen (author)TheDunkis2013-08-17

Thanks. The magazine release still isn't exactly how I'd like it, but for now, this is the most comfortable option.

Looking forward to see what you come up with.

dr. richtofen (author)TheDunkis2013-08-16

I completely forgot to work on it yesterday, so I'll do it today.
Moving the charging handle forward is easy, but incorporating two extra triggers or so for the mag-release and bolt lock can become a bit tricky.
I'll give it a go now.

Zombiekiller-93 (author)2013-08-13

This gun looks like the SMR from Call Of Duty: Black Ops II

Meh, not really IMO :p

Well, inserting the magazine into the stock is like the SMR

That's the case with most bullpup rifles ;)

nathanial1 (author)2013-08-13

So when u have a knex war do u like run up to ur opponent and like start hitting them with the rifle

dr. richtofen (author)nathanial12013-08-13

1: I don't have k'nex wars
2: No, I would sneak them up 'til about 10 feet behind, throw the gun as hard as I can against the back of their heads. In their confusion, sprint to the gun, pick it up, and hit them with it.
3: "When you have a knex war, do you run up to your opponent and start hitting them with the rifle?"

JonnyBGood (author)2013-08-13

Well, I was really excited but then I saw it didn't shoot....Dang it. I'll have to fix that after knex war 2013. Adding this gun to my list of stuff to build.

Oh, and ignore that Nathanial guy, I think he's just trolling all our stuff.

dr. richtofen (author)JonnyBGood2013-08-13

Well, it could be converted into a one-shot rifle probably.
I'm glad though that you want to build it :)
