Knife Games: 5-Finger Fillet

 by shadymilkman
After a long days work or school we all need to relax a little right? Me to, and the best way to relax is to put yourself in a situation where if you don't relax, you may just lose a digit. Nothing can get you on your way to sleep like a little 5-Finger Fillet.

***WARNING: I am in no form responsible for any damage, loss of property, partial or total amputation of a digit or limb, or death from the use of the instructions herein. If you think this could be a bad idea (which it is) don't do it.***
Thank you.

Step 1: Pick a knife, any knife, hopefully its your lucky knife!

For this game you only need four things, a knife, two hands and a table. There are many knives laying about my lab and I grabbed the few closest to me. You should go with something you are comfortable with, personally I go with a fixed blade due to a bad folding blade accident back in Boy Scouts. Ever had a knife fold down into your hand? It's all personal preference or what you have on hand. For practice, I recommend an unsharpened pencil, eraser down or another non-harmful item.

the real order is 1-2-1-3-1-4-1-5-1-6-1-5-1-4-1-3-1-2 ect
or 1-2-1-3-1-4-1-5-1-6-5-6-4-6-3-6-2-6 ect

dynikus says: Nov 16, 2009. 6:04 PM
1-2-3-4-5-6-5-4-3-2-1-2-3-etc is pretty easy after a while. What I usually do is 1-2-1-2-1-3-2-3-2-4-3-4-3-5-4-5-4-6-5-6-5-6-4-5-4-5-3-4-3-4-2-3-2-3-1-2-1-2-etc.
I find it more challenging. :]

you need a standard issue Marine ka-bar, my dad's is from the Vietanam era. Its a classic and he keeps it for service.
shadymilkman (author) in reply to AnarchistAsianNov 10, 2008. 7:12 PM
The good ol ka-bar. I want one too now that you mention it, but its a bit too pricey for my income/expenses. Hopefully all this education will pay off, but in the meantime, I can dream of a future with bigger and better knives.
AnarchistAsian in reply to shadymilkmanNov 10, 2008. 7:19 PM
ha ha, yeah... hopefully i can get one for christmas... retail price is 60 dollars on a full size. 40 on a short. the full size is over kill, but i still love it... if only they made a foliage green short blade. i would totally buy that myself...

So funny, especially the last step. Nice instructable.
Father Christmas says: Jan 17, 2009. 2:58 PM
haha. i learned this by using a pen. takes away most of the danger. then you gain skill and can do it with a blade.
Noodly0ne says: Oct 10, 2008. 5:47 PM
I have two of the same model "gopher knives"! Also from my grandfather! Weird... Nice instructable too, i like the 1-2-1-3-1-4-1-5-1-6-1-2-1-3-1-4-1-5-1-6-1 method myself.
AnarchistAsian in reply to Noodly0neNov 10, 2008. 5:34 PM
those are pretty common...
shadymilkman (author) in reply to Noodly0neMar 24, 2013. 9:36 PM
Some of the best knives i own are from my grandparents. Sentimental value plus they are usually made well.

my favourite is 1 2 1 3 1 4 1 5 1 6 1 5 1 4 1 3 1 2 1 2 1 3 and so on and so on. i can go realllllly fast with a pencil eraser, with a knife or anything sharper it gets stuck in the table a bit (or alot) everytime....

I tried this game, it is actually pretty relaxing. The trick is to relax when you go to stab and your fine
bowmaster says: Jul 2, 2008. 9:49 PM
This can be considered a form of meditation because you have to be aware of your body.

ur nuts man :)

My nuts! How did you see them?
2H2H says: Jun 19, 2008. 12:08 PM
I did this and had to get stitches. it felt tingly :-)
shadymilkman (author) in reply to 2H2HJun 27, 2008. 9:47 PM
ah, you probably could have used more practice.
TheSaneOne says: Jun 10, 2008. 11:38 AM
For real relaxation, try upgrading the 1-to-6-and-back-again routine with a more random approach: 1-3-2-4-6-2-3-1-5-etc... The trick here is that you must decide which slot to place the knife, on the fly. The mind, being indecisive, may sometimes "split the difference" and place the knife squarely between two slots. This is the routine I use for personal relaxation. Also, place your hand over someone elses hand and try. It's a "trust builder".

My Dad and i used to play this but instead he called it mumbly-peg. I don't know why
snakester in reply to Charles IVMar 19, 2008. 12:48 PM
Indeed. It is a totally different game which involves you flipping the knife off of parts of your body and making the knife stick into the ground/sand. My dad use to play it at school for money. He was a pro no-lifer :\
shadymilkman (author) in reply to Charles IVMar 11, 2008. 6:50 AM
Mumbly-peg is a different game actually. It involves throwing knives as close to your foot as possible. I plan on posting an instructable on that as well as soon as i get time and the ground will thaw out.

You are scary O.O
shadymilkman (author) in reply to InventorDMar 3, 2008. 9:52 AM
Scary is relative. That being said, I have unintentionally scared people before, mostly females late at night in parking lots, without even saying or doing anything creepy. Just walking to my car.
InventorD in reply to shadymilkmanMar 6, 2008. 3:14 PM
okay now your really creeping me out....D:<
shadymilkman (author) in reply to InventorDMar 11, 2008. 6:46 AM
*Sigh* Just live a day in the life of a "creepy" person and see how it is. Not fun, people stare. I'm a good person, I'm even a volunteer firefighter but people still don't see past the long hair and large build. Go figure.
fireandshadows says: Feb 11, 2008. 2:19 PM
i do this at school with my pencl. it scares people.

I miss the table and fingers and I stab my wrist because my hand shakes to much.
GorillazMiko says: Jan 25, 2008. 5:43 PM
I like the top knife in the picture in step 1. Just kidding. That's the laptop, haha. Nice job, I like how you put Instructables on your laptop during the Instructable.
GorillazMiko in reply to GorillazMikoJan 25, 2008. 5:44 PM
But, it's still dangerous.
