Knot bad!

Sorry, I couldn't resist. Pioneering (and knots/lashings/etc) were one of my favorite parts of Boy Scouts when I was a kiddo. Had to laugh when I joined the Navy and they tried to teach us how to tie a bowline.

Sorry I'm late replying, just saw this post. Heh. I think they taught us the one-handed bowline, but being dyslexic, I've forgotten how to tie it. I can still whip one out two-handed (rabbit goes up the hole, around the tree, back down the hole...although my first attempts had the rabbit over the hill, to the grocery store, watching a couple of movies, hitting a bar, then staggering somewhere in the vicinity of home). Man, I miss all that Pioneering stuff! Can't wait until the kiddo is old enough to pass along the skillz...that kid is gonna be the only girl in her class to bring a self-made knot-board to show-n-tell, and have a friction-bridge built out on the playground. Plastic toys? Not my girl...within the first week of kindergarten, she's gonna have a complete fort lashed together with watchtowers and suspension bridge (no two-wire traverse for her!). Yeah. Teachers beware, indeed!

I've been known to keep younger Scouts in line with a slip-knot pair of handcuffs...tie the trailing ends around the other side of a tree trunk, and there's no way they can untie themselves. May have to post an 'ibble on that...

I actually worked at a boy scout camp and the rock climbing counselor made everyone learn the one handed bowline. Its pretty fun.
