Press the end of the wire against the first bend in the wire.

 

This should actually be work hardened enough to keep the end from slipping. However, I would suggest tumbling for an hour or so just to be completely sure.

To tumble jewelry or jewelry components, you put them in a tumbler (a rock tumbler is fine, without the rocks and grit) with stainless steel shot and a small amount of regular (not "ultra") dishwashing soap. This hardens the wire and polishes it.
