I have always wanted to do this but have had a hard time finding a mother scoby or the organic all-natural etc kombucha tea to start from. I live in Raleigh, NC and I was wondering if anybody knows of a place where I can buy a mother scoby (online or in person) or a store which carries an appropriate kombucha tea to start from?

you can order them online. I used to sell them myself. once you get one you can keep a backup in the freezer for a period of time. google and you should be able to find a culture for sale.

I've seen a couple places online but was hesitant to try them without any reviews, have you ordered from any that you could recommend?

exactly what is kombucha?

Kombucha is a symbiot of bacteria and fungii which live in a type of mat that floats to the top of the tea. it produces natural antifungal/antibiotic chemicals which when the tea is consumed sweat out of the skin and permeate the body. it's really good for persons with candida and flora imbalances. one of the strangest things about consuming this tea is it turns your sweat into antibiotic and every pair of shoes I wore while drinking the tea would smell like they were new.

Fermented tea, basically. (Remember, all alcohol is fermented, so it's not such a bad thing.) It's lauded for its health benefits.
