I haven't come up with any way to do it, some people have found cables that have a connection that goes from *some video connector* to VGA, but they don't work. The only thing you could do is get a S-Video/RCA to USB converter and run that into the laptop.

Browning the LCD panel is a real threat to shorten the life of a great project. They are quite susceptible to heat degradation. Removing the panel from the surface 1/2 inch is a good start. I would further suggest adding a piece of IR reflective glazed glass from a discarded window or a local window supplier between the surface of the projector and the LCD panel ....Problem solved.

can this idea be easily adapted for rear screen projection and rather then using an overhead projector as a whole unit, could the vital parts be stripped out and used in the rear projection case, this is probably the best 'how to do it' ive seen anywhere!

I've seen some people who were playing around with projector boxes and full size LCD's online but I can't find the website now. The only issues there are making sure that you have a bright enough light and that your optics are lined up correctly, otherwise there isn't anything that I can think of.

Great instructable waterppk! Ive been following the DIY projector scene for about six months now and have finally purchased an old overhead projector and now im trying to organise a screen. The main purpose of the projector will be to play ps3 on it and i was wondering if i could play ps3 on a laptop screen if the laptop has a yellow rca or s-video plug on the side of it? This would be the best because most laptop screens are xga if not wxga.

It was from our state surplus store. They sell stuff for cheap just to get rid of it, sometimes there are deals to be found, other times you can buy junk that's just that - it doesn't work and will never work again :)

I made the same thing 2 years ago, I used a 750 MHz Toshibia with a DVD drive and wireless network card. I can play DviX movies (and Xvid) and H.264 encoded videos on it, thought the dvd drive or the harddrive (added by the wifi network) works nice. the back light had died on the drive and i had a new laptop anyway. I added a IR reciver so i can use a remote to play pause and other stuff with the movies /tv series and stuff, added blue tooth as well so i can use a wireless keyboard/ mouse with it. surf the web and all sorts of stuff -also has a NES/SNES emulator on it with about 200 or so roms that i can play --Trying to convert an old SNES controller to work on the parallel port no luck so far. maybe later. thats about it... its really cool, if i have time i will make a instuctable about it (it will be my first though..he he )

Lap-top LCDs require specialized (and damn expensive!) signal converters, and even then it's not a guarantee that it would function. You're better off buying a stand-alone 15 LCD and modifying it for projector's needs. You could use 17 as well (main benefit being a higher resolution, usually 1280x1024), if your overhead projector's projecting area is large enough to accommodate it.

The competition runs until 23rd so every unique visitor counts :P The hybrid is usually at all the big hybrid shows in the area, you can check outour calendar of events, it looks like we'll be at the Going Green WI expo at the end of the month
