Step 1Design

Design
If not obvious, the intent is to make this table appear to look like the cutaway of an unguided bomb.

The table is made from three pieces - the base (2 parts) and a top.

I left some holes in the center area to allow an alarm clock cord to pass through.

Late reply but there absolutely is a place you can laser stuff. Techshop! Locations in San Jose, Menlo Park, and San Francisco. Check out Techshop.ws

I just signed up again after a long hiatus and its great. If you sign up, tell them Taylor Alexander referred you and I'll get a nice free class coupon. :)

For the lazier among us, Ponoko in Oakland will laser stuff for you and mail it your way.

My friend's company got a Trotec Laser Cutter Speedy 500. Do you think it is possible to make such a table with this laser machine too?

I am impressed with this. What width of material did you use. That would be key to getting it to fit together. You do not say in the instructable

I also wanted to ask does the file also contain the instruction to print the artwork as I have downloaded the file and opened it in Solidworks eDrawings but I do not see artwork of the girl

Thank you for your service.

Is there a hobby shop at your base? My last base had a pretty decent one with hourly rentals of space and equipment, as well as people who could give advice (but not touch projects). I used the auto part mostly, but the prices were very reasonable, even as an E2.

I have been trying to design something similar to this, just a simple pyramid, to use as pedestals at an art gallery. I doubt most people would recognize the bomb and it has very nice lines. I need something I can store in the van and set up/take down quickly. This is perfect.

I also noticed that you said your favorite number is 42.

Have you read "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy", by Adams?

"Only Apparrently Real" is a biography in interviews of P.K. Dick. I reccommend it.

Hmm. Interesting. How big is the working area in your laser? Sounds like it must be a lot larger than the one I have been using. I made an adirondack chair that might fit a barbie doll.
Jan 14, 2011. 10:44 AMthepelton says:
My laser is a little 12x18.

I like the idea of posting the directions for the chair. Maybe I can make it Instructable number two.

what is it made out of? did you laser burn the design into the table?
Jan 14, 2011. 10:51 AMthepelton says:
I used 3mm, or 1/8 inch Baltic Birch plywood. It's available in lumberyards in 5 foot by 5 foot squares. (153cmx153cm) for about twenty five bucks. It's cheaper if you don't have to have it cut down to put in the car, which I do. (2001 Dodge Neon).

I'd been looking at the base of that table in the workshop trying to figure out what it is! Well done! Wouldn't have guessed you were making a table.
