Laser Etching Macintosh Powerbooks.

Step 4Set laser speeds and feeds appropriately.

I use an epilog mini: http://www.epiloglaser.com/mini24_overview.htm

the nice result setting is 50%speed, 100%power for a bitmap image, 20%speed, 100% power for a vector image.

Any idea where in the SF Bay Area a mere mortal could have this done for a reasonable price?

Check out Tech Shop (techshop.ws). You could buy a daily membership and engrave it yourself for cheap.

There's no way our Materials Lab will let us run something like this in our laser systems (universal laser systems). Glass, Metal and foreign objects (like food and computers, yes people have sliced food using these). I would suggest you a little caution and some warning about the depth of the cut in case someone accidently punches through the shell of the LCD panel and burns out their computer screen. I know our laser system can cut through 1/4" of material like butter with the proper focus depth and reduction in speed of the laser...

For a Universal V-460, vector images look best with 5% speed, 30% power...nice and clean, a dark line but just a surface burn and no halo.
See http://www.flickr.com/photos/ladyada/search/tags:powerbook/ for images
