video Learn to Sew!
Lots of people want to learn to sew and this vid gives tips on how to get started very inexpensively. This is a very short entry because it is for a 30 second video contest :)

Start by looking for an older, mechanical machine - they are great for learning on and pretty inexpensive. In fact, if you find one in a cabinet you can take it out of the cabinet and sell the cabinet!
Be sure to clean and oil the machine before sewing with it.
Check out books from your library on sewing basics and maybe start a sewing circle in your town so that many people can learn from each other :)

It is really easy to learn to sew on the old sewing machines, I was trying to emphasize that you don't need to spend a lot of money to learn to sew. I know that anyone can learn to sew from a book but it's much nicer to learn from a person!
I find that in a lot of communities there are lots of people who want to learn to sew but don't have a lot of money. I think it is a good idea to form a group of learners - - and all try and learn together. Some people will know more than others and some will be good at working on machines, but if everyone shares their knowledge and enthusiasm then everyone benefits :)
I hope that my short video didn't discourage you! There are some great videos about sewing on YouTube and other open video sources and there are some really good books about it. Please try your library or look for a sewing or quilting group in your town, or consider starting one of your own. Once you get sewing you'll be hooked! It is a great creative outlet :)
