Sew the flat part of the sides to the top piece. Center them on the long part of the oval. Next, sew the inserts to the top to cover the gaps. DO NOT sew the inserts to the sides. Pull the brim over the sides and sew it on. Make sure to line your long points of the ovals up. Roll the outer edges of your brim over and hem, inserting the bailing wire as you go. I used a zipper foot. Go SLOWLY.
I have the pieces all cut, but I'm confused, in the previous step "step 7" you write "The "high" parts of the wave are the front and rear, the low parts are the side" Then in this step you write "Center them on the long part of the oval". I'm obviously misunderstanding, because these seem to say different things to me. Is the long part of the oval the front and back? Awesome Instructable! Thanks!
Your best bet is probably to hold the pieces together and try to make them look like the finished picture. I think that will help you to see the spacial relationship, and be of the most help.
Referring to the 2nd picture of this step 8.... do you sew the sides to the top 'inside out' first? Then turn it 'right side out' to sew the sides the bottom? Or do you sew it 'right side out' as it would look in the final product? Thanks!
After you sew the sides to the top and brim, you sew the top of the insert to the top of the hat, and the bottom of the insert to the brim. Riveting the sides of the insets is in step 9.
I like to make stuff. I teach stagecraft to high school kids, and have won some awards for it. In my dream world, I will get to make wacky stuff all day and teach other people how to make wacky stuf...

I own a little apartment building in a state of never ending remodel. I'm trying to document things that I think other people might like. Watch a video I did on installing door casing here:

Right now I'm getting ready for burning man, sewing a tribal bellydance outfit, and making an LED hula hoop.
Essentially, take the wavy rectangle and attach it to the brim and the top?
Also, attach the inserts to the top, then the brim.
Last, roll a hem around the edge of the brim, pushing wire into the fold as you go.
