Picture of Lego Portal Turret
These are the instructions for my popular design of a laser turret from Portal. It's all Lego; you won't need any other materials to make this nice display piece.

Step 1: Parts needed

Here are the parts you'll need. You may have some, most, or all of these in your own collection; if not, you can get them from Bricklink.com (or Lego's Pick-A-Brick , but they tend to be much more expensive, if somewhat easier). Part names may be different between Bricklink and Pick-A-Brick.

We do what we must because we can.
For the good of all of us
except the ones who are dead
but there's no sense crying over ever mistake
You just keep on trying 'till you run out of cake
And the science gets done and you make a neat gun for the people who are still alive
i'm not even angry.
Im being so sincere right now
even though you broke my heart and killed me

Thanks, all! Glad you like it. Feel free to continue the song ;)

And threw every piece into a fire.
As they burned it hurt because
I was so happy for you!
Now these points of data make a beautiful line.
and we're out of beta we're releasing on time
So I'm GLaD. I got burned.

(so proud of you guys ^_^)
Think of all the things we've learned,
for the people whoa are still alive
go ahead and leave me
i think i prefer to stay inside
Maybe you'll find someone else to help you.
Maybe black mesa!
That was a joke. Haha. FAT CHANCE.
Anyway this cake is great. It's so delicious and moist.
This type of posts shows us that we are united, that we as DIY followers support each other, nice work people not only we have a great instructable here, but we have an active community
Look at me still talking when there's Science to do.

Thanks for the C-C-C-COMBO BREAKER... We really needed that.
When I look out there, it makes me GLaD I'm not you.
Just cause i love this game :P
I've experiments to run.
There is research to be done.

Well here we are again. It's always such a pleasure.
Remember when you tried to kill me twice?
Oh, how we laughed and laughed
Except I wasn't laughing
Under the circumstances, I've been shockingly nice.
You want your freedom take it,
thats what im counting on,
i used to want you dead but ...
now I only want you gone.

Idk if you were told or know about this but his website is how the minecraft lego got off the ground. Also the best part is that you get some monies from it too.

Might i ask what program youre using in the pics? if you are indeed using one?
L.D.M. (author)  Krayzi992 years ago
I built it in MLCad, and took screenshots of each step in LDView. There are easier ways to make instructions, but I'm not very familiar with them. I think most people use LPub.
Hope that helps!
Krayzi99 L.D.M.2 years ago
Thanks! ive wanted a program to "replace" (as you can never, really, replace legos!) legos for the time being. I have TWO legos...
I'm not finding a lot of these pieces on the Pick a Brick. What might I be doing wrong?
L.D.M. (author)  flyinhawaiian162 years ago
Maybe nothing. I'm guessing it's the slopes on top that they doesn't have?

You are looking at the online Pick-a-Brick, right? Just making sure; the ones in the Lego stores have a much worse selection. If you can't find it on Pick-a-Brick online, you might try Bricklink.com.

Hope that helps!
Krayzi992 years ago
I heared GLaDOS's autotuned voice in my head the whole tim reading those comments... anyway, thanks. you are the one reason im going to dig up my legos!
also, is there any way to make room for a led in the center?

awww man, that was tough. It is truly an awesome model, but I do plan on never touching it again as long as I live. The looks are spot on, and I'm glad that I've made it. But be ready to reattach pieces a lot, and re-adjust the legs with steady hands until you find it a permanent home. But, as zovitz said, it was very creative and ends up as a great looking piece.
Please keep on a sturdy surface.

im sorry for my atitude i wasn't that cheerful when i posted that comment
L.D.M. (author)  Dumchicken3 years ago
It's okay. Turns out, we were wrong about that piece being called an "erling"; erlings are this piece:
http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=4070

"Erling Brick" … named by the LEGO Designer Erling Dideriksen, who invented this element in 1979
thats actualy what i was refering to...

where did you get 3820 - minifig hand from? It's a nightmare finding all these parts to actually make this. 3820 doesn't exist on Brick Link, and I can't find any of the codes on the Lego site, so not sure if they are supposed to tally up
L.D.M. (author)  moorsey3 years ago
I've added links, as well as an Excel sheet with more parts information.
moorsey L.D.M.3 years ago
appreciate the extra info and links. Got all the parts with 3 orders from Brick Link! Looks great, bought double everything so my brother can make one too, thanks for this!

HUGE SUCCESS!

This is totally awesome, and cheap. Ordered the last of the parts today. Should get the majority of them early next week. Will post a pic when it's built. Thanks, author!
winterfresh3 years ago
Awww! I missed the insane "Still alive" combo post! Why did you feature and lock it! WHY GLaDOS WHY?!???!!?!?

Nice Instructable and good luck in the contest!
This is awesome! But trying to get the parts is just awful. Nobody has all of the parts or they're invalid numbers. I'm not going to put this together or vote for this until there is either pics or a clear way to build this thing. Links to the bricks would be nice.
L.D.M. (author)  anotherfanboy3 years ago
Links are up now, as well as an Excel sheet. :)

I'll try to find a store that has all of them, then add that to the first step.
Thanks for actually caring :P

The only bad part is trying to find one place that sells it all. Ordering from 5 different places isn't cool. I might end up having to buy a majority from Pick-A-Brick...

Kofoed3 years ago
OK, quick question. Any of u guys actually knows where Lego comes from :D
DENMARK! The original product line of LEGO were simply models, not buildable models, which were released as the Lego System.
Only the best is good enough.
exactly, lego actually means leg godt, which means play good :D DENMARK FTW!!!
GitarGr83 years ago
If only it shot 1x1 bricks at test subjects... very cool nonetheless.
Zovits3 years ago
Yes, during reading the instructions I also thought that this looks so flimsy as if even a stronger ray of light could break it...
But nonetheless it uses some very creative and non-traditional ways to connect pieces and the final product looks very much like the original.
AWESOME! are you still there?... put me down! I don't blame you...
mattme3 years ago
Very cool! I'm going to make this with a red LED for the eye.

I have watched some, actually. Not very interesting. Yes, "erling" is A name given to that part, but "travis brick" is much more common among the AFOL community.

Okay, discounting parts I already have this will only cost me £6.50... plus £5 postage. I've spent far more on worse things.
Gonna check out bricklink too though :)
Great build..
Wondering if you could have done this in the lego designer software?
http://ldd.lego.com/
L.D.M. (author)  Greasetattoo3 years ago
I don't think so; it's pretty picky about what connections you can do. It definitely wouldn't let you do the eye, and I don't think there's a minifig hand part in there (separate from the body, anyway).
