Unlike the previous step's bricks, these have studs (the knobby things) on all four vertical sides -- they are often called "travis bricks". This step ties the whole assembly thus far into one piece.

It's okay. Turns out, we were wrong about that piece being called an "erling"; erlings are this piece:

I have watched some, actually. Not very interesting. Yes, "erling" is A name given to that part, but "travis brick" is much more common among the AFOL community.
