Step 3: Build the slingshot

Cut one 2 x 4 about 32 inches. This is the long base pole of the slingshot. Cut two 1 foot pieces of 2 x 4. These will be the two arms of the slingshot. Cut two 22 inch pieces of 1 x 4. Attach the two 1x4 pieces to either side of the 32 inch long 2 x 4 at a 90 degree angle. I used 8 D nails. Slide a 1 foot section of 2 x 4 on each side of the arm (between the 1 x 4s). Attach using 8 D nails. Drill a 3/8 inch hole in the center of each arm about 3 inches from the top of each arm. This is where rubber tubing will be attached.

Thnx for the ibble.

Made mine for my son's b-day party.

It was a great attraction for both yound and old kids.

Grandpa jumped in to show his military expertize also.

Construction was a bit diferent from your instructions but similar nonetheless. I ended up using car bungy cords and pallet wood remnants found in my garage for the sling.

King Pig and Green Minion Pigs were cutout from a 40cm x 100cm x 1.5cm board, then hand painted with all the facial details.

For fear of injuries we used plastic pool balls for ammo, which are so light they do not hurt if by chance you happen to hit someone with it.

Impressive build! Looks like a lot of fun!

Built this for my son's birthday party. I angled the uprights a little to give it a rough quality. My son and daughter love it!

That's really neat! I'm glad those kids are having some active fun! Thanks for sharing.

Took some inspiration from this and built my own version... Uses a bit less wood on the base I think, and so is probably a bit lighter. Bolting it all together means it fits in the back of a car easily.

Kept about 20 6 year olds happy... set it up indoors with empty boxes to fire at, they then got a bit good at it so we took it outside for a 'how far can you go' session...

I'd say it had about a 30-40m range...

The elastic snapped eventually, but its easily replaceable.

Great idea and build - I hope to build this, this weekend.

A quick question on the base...

It look like you framed the base with:

2 - 5 foot lengths of 1x4
5 - 2 foot lengths of 1x4
2 - 2 foot lengths of 2x4

Is that correct?

Thanks!
That's it! I tend to overbuild things. 2x4 might not be necessary. Good luck.
Thanks - that is great!
What are hurricane straps in Canada?
I do not know what they are called in Canada. The are small metal straps bent at 90 degree angle to attach to your roof rafter and the floor joist on the top floor. They have them at most lumber stores and hardware stores. Here is a better picture of them:

http://www.captaintropic.com/images/tie_h3.GIF

Thanks, I finally made it! I think I made too big of pouch for it! What size of pouch and firing objects would you recommend?
I made a pouch out of leather about 4 inches long and 2 inches wide, but tapered at the ends where the rubber is attached.
Airsoft greande launcher anyone?
I believe slingshots are illegal in New Jersey...please be careful
I think that a giant slingshot would be ok - it's generally illegal for hunting, but not recreational use like water balloon catapults and such.
It's really clever, and cute, and looks like boatloads of fund--BUT, don't be surprised if one of these days, before too long, you are served s "Cease and Desist" order, drawn up by the copyright holders of the Angry Birds franchise. I have a very good friend who was making incredibly good soft-sculpture characters drawn from a popular Sunday comic strip. She made ten of one character, and made the mistake of sending one to the creator of the strip--and got her "Cease and Desist" order a couple of days later. Instructables.com is a pretty public site, and legal types always have an eye peeled to catch copyright infringement. I hope I'm wrong.
Thanks for the heads-up. We just made this for fun for a picnic. I'm going to give it to a guy that works with youth a lot. I don't plan on making any more and definitely not for sale. We did purchase the Angry Bird stuffed animals from the company that makes Angry Birds - Rozzio, I think. So, let's hope all turns out well. Thanks again.
Dude, you did a great job. Dont worry about the Law suit and stuff. Your not making bootleg Angry Bird games. Your product is unique and you did a wonder fall job !!! Now , if you start selling these out of the trunk of your car... maybe some Finlandian would come after you. Again GREAT JOB. Im gonna make me one of these.
T-mobile already did a real world promotional demo with angry birds in barcelona spain.

Also if it isnt in violation of the labeled use it would seem legit to think it islegal fair use. What else are the dolls for? A little "revenge" for stealing eggs is what the franchise is all about. And he isnt making counterfeit knock offs to sell.
Rovio. It's a Finnish company and as such probably not as trigger happy with law suits as an American company would be. (In fact I think they would have the good sense to be flattered.) Besides they don't have a case as you're not making money on it, and they would have to sue you in Finland instead of US, and the chances of them winning the case in Finland are slim to none and simply not worth the risk of having to pay a free trip for you.. So don't worry. :) They might ask you to change the name of this instructable, but that's about as far as they could/would go.
where is the attached picture? Do you have to download the pdf?
We have pictures on each step. What picture/step are you asking about?
me and my sister had the same exact idea while we were at walmart
THAT IS SOO CUTE! About time angry birds went life sized!
I was thinking that if you waterproofed the pigs you could fire waterbombs at them too! Nice idea
Y'all got aythin for dogs???
Tom,
I think a bird dog would appreciate you using the slingshot to fling angry birds at to fetch :)
You never gave the kids a turn lol It's nice to share ya know
You did a great job on this. I saw the stuffed birds and pigs in Walmart too, but at about $12 each, I thought they were too pricey. My kids wanted them, and they inspired the same idea in us as you had. I bought red balls for $1.50 each and used paint pens to paint on angry bird faces. For $1.00 we bought 6 of the green jack-o-lantern trick-or-treat buckets that Walmart has loads of right now. Pig faces were painted on the other side. We bought large exercise elastic pieces (3 in a box) and tied them between our trampoline and a skinny, but sturdy, tree to make the sling shot. The kids loved it.
Great, Vid?
Thanks. We just made a movie and posted the youtube link on the last page of the instructable.

Just gonna watch it, ;)
Video please!!
Thanks. We just made a movie and posted the youtube link on the last page of the instructable.
I'll see if I can get someone to take one for me. It's a blast of a game. We took it to someone's house with lots of kids and they really loved it.
That's is an awesome idea for the next summer.
Keep up the good work!
haha, awesome!
Great Idea!
my kids are addicted to the game and I'm always trying to get them to play outside. this is way to get them to remember that the shining ball in the sky is callled the Sun......
Awesome! Looks like a lot of fun. Do you have pictures of the Angry Birds you used?
I added two pictures of the birds in step 4 - Putting it together. I bought the angry birds at Walmart. They were small and had a plastic key holder attached to the head which I cut off.
