Picture of Lip Balm Key Chain
My wife doesn't like getting chapped lips.

Who does, really?

The only problem is that she tends to lose her favorite brand of balm. We must have spent $100 so far, and she has yet to finish a single tube.

In an effort to help, I attached it to her keys. Now she has it when she needs it.

Step 1: What you will need:

Picture of What you will need:
Heavy duty thread
Needle-nose pliers
Lip balm with a screw- on cap

Step 2: Poke some holes in the cap.

Picture of Poke some holes in the cap.
Take the needle and poke two holes on either side of the dimple on top of the cap.

You may need to use the needle-nose pliers to push the needle through the cap. It doesn't take a great deal of effort.

While the needle is in sticking in the plastic, make nice wide circles to open up the holes. The holes should be big enough that the needle should easily pass through the hole, eye and all.

Step 3: Do some sewing.

Picture of Do some sewing.
Thread the needle with some heavy duty thread. If you look inside the cap you will see that there is a little spike that plugs the hole on the applicator on the tube of balm. Pass the thread through the cap from one hole to the other, so that the first pass goes on one side of this spike and the next pass goes on the other side. I made 4 passes.

Tie off the thread.

I used a woven thread, so I melted the end with a lighter to keep from fraying.

Step 4: Attach the key ring.

Pass the key under the thread. I found that it helps to use the dimple in the top of the cap the get the ring started, otherwise it's a pretty tight fit.

Avoid faying the thread.

Note: Pliers are not necessary for this step, They're just holding every thing up so I could take the picture.
i just throw my chapstick in my altoids tin wallet. reduces the rattle of pennies too. good idea though for someone always losing their balm.

as for the purse you could hang the balm from the handle

Great idea. Would the instructions be the same for the cylinder kind of lip balm, with the twisty disk at the bottom?
What a fabulous idea! I am always losing my lipbalm, I must give this a go.

Very clever. Just yesterday I was wondering what happened to all my lip balm. It's the kind that wouldn't work with your instructable but I'm almost motivated now to only buy balm with a lid that would work (b/c I'm too lazy to come up with my own solution for those traditional chapstick type sticks) :)

Clever idea, I carry some balm in my purse, but I am forever rummaging around trying to find it, now you know it's with your keys!
