Introduction: Longboard Deck

The instructable is focusing on how to make a longboard. The longboard being made is a freerider, and should be strong enough to hold people. The materials and machines were all provided by the school meaning that ghe machines should be easily found somewhere, as they can be used with a lot of different materials. the material being used is also not the most expensive.

Step 1: Step 1: Materials

Materials

- 2 x Plywood 30 cm x 110 cm

- 1x Griptape 28 cm x 110 cm

Tools

- 1 x old brush

- 1x wood glue

- 1x wood varnish

- 6-10 x clamps

- weights

- 1x scissor

- 1x tape

- 4x A4 paper

- 1x pencil

- 1x sand paper

- spray paint

- news paper

Machines

- scroll saw

- disk and belt sander

Step 2: Step 2: Create a Place to Draw Design

Duration

5 minutes

Materials required:

- 4x A4 paper

- scissor

- ducktape

Procedure

Take the 4 pieces of A4 paper and cut duck tape strips to the perfect size of the paper. Then glue all of the papers together. Be sure that the papers are round about straight making it easier for the further steps.

Step 3: Step 2: Drawing of Design

Duration:

1 hour

Materials req:

- design paper

- pencil

- ruler

- eraser

- compass/ something round

Sizes

- length of board = 107 cm

- width in the middle= 25 cm

- Width outside = 28

- tails length= 14 cm

Procedure:

Take the paper from step one and put it on a table. Start of by finding the length you want and draw a straight line from one end to the other. I took 107 cm. After that find the middle of the line and draw a line there. Then decide what for a width you want to have in the middle and make a line of that. For that I took 25 cm. Then decide how long your tails are and make a line where they should stop. Then use a compass or a round abject to give you a good start to round the tails. Then continue by drawing by hand. You must decide how wide the part after the tails will be. Draw a line of how wide and connect it with your tale. Then Cut the half out and sketch if over to the other side. You can then choose what for a design you want. For example, with mine I created a kind of curved longboard. Then cut out the whole design.

Step 4: Step 4: Glueing

Duration:

10 min

Materials:

- wood glue

- the two wood pieces

- brush

Procedure

Str with taking one of the woods and sketch of the board onto the wood from there. Use tape to fix it to the board so it doesn't always move. Take the two wood pieces and put the nice side on the bottom. Then put wood a line of wood glue and separate it nicely and fairly to both sides. Be sure to put newspaper beneath the gluing so you will not have to clean to much at the end. Be sure to not put to much glue onto the wood, as otherwise it will come out on the sides when putting the two pieces together. Try to get the wood even out and be very sure that there is also glue on the edges. Then put the two woods together and try to get them perfectly on top of each other.

Step 5: Step 5: Adding Clamps

Duration

5 min

Materials

- 6-10 clamps

Procedure:

After finishing the glue step take clamps and put them all around the board. Be sure that the corners have clamps on them and that the woods don't move during that process or otherwise the glue could go all over and mybe also started to dry a bit.

Step 6: Step 6: Putting on Weights

Duration:

20 min

Materials:

- blocks

- weights

Procedure

Take 4 blocks and place them beneath the board. Be sure that the middle of the board does not touch the floor. Then get weights and put them into the middle to get a slight bend into there. If possible try to get a smaller weight creating a u- bend into the board. Then let the board stay like that for at least 24 hours.

Step 7: Step 7: Cutting the Board

Duration:

1 hour

Materials

- scroll saw

- sketched on wood

Procedure:

Maybe ask somebody to help you hold the wood, as it will be quite difficult to cut on your own. Start with the top tail, as that will take the most amount of time. Always try and cut in small pieces, as it would be very difficult to cut all at once. Start of with the two tails and then work your self down on the sides trying to cut as precisely on the line. It does not matter if you only slowly proceed, but the better you get the cut the easier it will get later.

Step 8: Step 8: Smoothing and Forming the Board

Duration:

2 hours

Materials

- sand paper

- sanding machine

Procedure:

Start of by smoothing the top and the bottom of the board. Then continue with the sides. Try to get the edges smoothened. If wanted you can get the edges rounder, making the board look nicer. The smoothing should be done by a sanding machine or sanding paper, however, it takes a long time to get the right shape.

Step 9: Step 9: Designing/ Colouring Bottom of Board

Duration:

?

Materials:

- spray paint

Procedure

I asked a friend to make me a space design out of spray paint. At the end he had free choice of how he wanted it to look like, as I don't really have an experience with spray paint.

Step 10: Step 10: Wood Varnish

Duration:

20 min

Materials:

- wood varnish

- newspaper

- paintbrush

Procedure:

Take your longboard and cover it with wood varnish all over the board. One layer of varnish would be enough. If having little amount of time dry it with a hair dryer. This should take about 1 hour.

Step 11: Step 11: Colour the Edges

Duration:

20 min

Materials:

- paint

- paintbrush

- newspaper

Procedure:

Take the paintbrush and colour all around the board. I chose the colour black, but you don't have to take the same colour. Be sure to put newspaper underneath if you do not want to make a lot of mess. After that you can decide if you want to add grip tape of wheels, but this is not in this instructables.
